We went up to Jacks Canyon and the Casino Cliffs to lap some easy stuff in the morning. The wall got warm quick, so we headed up after a short session. It was nice to be able to move vertically after a long lay off. It was a fun morning. A nice end to my summer break.

This area has always piqued my curiosity, but I have never made it here. When most people make the trek up here, it's 7 miles north to the climbing area. The only HAZ'ers who had done or documented anything in the area added to the interest. @MountainMatt and also @N8TRGRL, who posted a track in 2020, with no photos and a single emoticon as a triplog with a head-scratching title. This further fueled my curiosity, so I drew up a track that would satisfy both these interests.

I parked a quarter mile west of SR87 on FR9731F and started my counterclockwise (CCW) loop. I think I picked a decent area for my descent into the canyon. It was steep and slippery, but if you follow the game trails, you'll make it down.

The steep, sheer cliff walls were reminiscent of other canyons above the rim. I followed game trails to the sides where I could, to speed up travel. Quite a few flowers were still hanging on. I only passed two sections that held any water during the 7+ miles I was in the canyon.

At one point, I must have been close to a nest of a Zone-tailed Hawk. The pair circled me noisily until I was out of range. I half expected to be dive-bombed.

There were plenty of signs of bear, turkey, and lion in the canyon, but birds were the only fauna I saw.

At the southernmost portion of my loop in the canyon, I tried to figure out why @N8TRGRL called her triplog "Massacre Canyon Beaches." I could find no explanation, but maybe I did not venture far enough south?

At this point, I exited the canyon and followed numerous two-tracks and off-trail sections to find my way back to the car.

Overcast skies and temperatures in the 70s made for some pleasant hiking.

A nice little afternoon strolling through, up and around Jacks Canyon and the many feeder drainages that flow into it.
Little chilly with the wind whipping up but other than that a nice shift to warmer weather in the high country.
Some signs of ancients and animals along the way but other than that nothing but solitude and quiet country.

A return back to an area I had some good luck with and found rather pleasant.
Without shade the sun is brutal out here but fortunately a half hour into our hike the nearby monsoon storm clouds blocked out the sun entirely for the majority of the afternoon.
Never figured I’d to run into anything spectacular in terms or ruins or lithics in this specific spot as I feel and know the bulk of it is located north towards the Chavez Pass region and so forth but I did finally find small amounts of pottery sherds and other bits of worked stone.
Very quiet area out here and even though there is truly endless amounts of cedar flats to walk I’m always eagerly wondering what’s around the next opening or patch of trees.
Great walk and leg stretcher in the woods.

A hot shadeless day of exploring the massive amounts of pristine wildlife land in and around Jacks Canyon.
Started a few miles north of the dry Dogie Tank and hiked around as much as I could but had to keep taking breaks for my dog to cool off as it was just airidly warm with not a lick of water to cool off in.
Lots of natural roofs and alcoves line the crest of the canyons edge making for all sorts of eye catching little areas to explore.
Still a few spots I want to check out in this area but after that I would love to head further downstream near the Chavez Pass region as I feel like there is a lot of interesting things to be discovered around there.

Although the typed directions for the climbers paradise is correct, the “Google Drive” is set on a two track off of FR 9731 seven miles south of the actual “Jacks Canyon Climber Campground and Trailhead.
I always knew about the mixup but saw this as a great area to explore and nice drop in point into JC where it is more forested and seemed like a great area for wildlife.
The old two track runs all the way out the western edge of a little peninsula and from there it is an easy and gradual couple hundred feet to the canyon bottom.
My dog and I spent the majority of the day along the rim and foothills up top but did go down into the canyon both upstream and downstream to check it out.
It only actually rained for about a half hour but other than that it was intermittent sprinkling followed up by sunshine and peace.
Lots of land to be explored out here in this great area.

Okay, not a backpack, but I did a little hiking for three days, and didn't want to log them all separately.

Drove up Thursday night. Original plan was Enchanted Tower, but the weather looked pretty serious over there, so Jack's was possibly a better option. Camped Thursday night after making a reasonable fire.

Friday, the majority of people headed into the canyon to climb. I wandered around a bit in the direction of Lost World, and located a trail that dropped into the canyon. Decided not to risk anything with the foot, and took a couple pictures instead. Went back to camp and stretched for a bit before walking into the canyon. The climbers on Casino were feeling rather warm, but at that point the sun was almost about to go behind the canyon wall (in another hour and a half.. ugh). So I walked over to Main Wall and stayed in the shade while splitting sangria and grapes with the others. Clouds eventually covered the sky, making the canyon more tolerable. However, we decided it wasn't enough. Janelle and I, and some of the others, packed up and left for East Clear Creek for some cliff diving and swimming! It was late in the day, but the water still felt good. And it was nice to wash away the sweat and grime of the day.

The rain set in Friday night, so we awoke to little puddles in our tent Saturday morning. The sun was shining bright, and did a great job drying everything out. The climbers went back into the canyon, and I decided to do a little dirt road exploration on foot. There are a few roads in the general area, so I walked down a couple of them. One led to the very end of a ridge, and down into the canyon, where Lost World actually is. I again decided not to follow the trail all the way in, so took a few pictures and tried to find any bolted routes from up above. Didn't see anything, so went back the way I came. Ended up walking the wrong way down another road I encountered, which took me away from camp. But I could see one of our bright white canopies, so left the road early and walked back to camp. I'd left intending only to walk about three miles, but ended up with six. Not bad, and my foot felt great. Did more stretching and some ice massage, and then joined the other climbers below at Swiss Wall. A few of them were already packing up to go swimming again, so I said hi and bye to James and walked back out.

By the time we got to the creek again, it had begun to rain and the air was becoming a little colder. This did not deter us, as the water was still nice enough. We jumped in and swam around for a bit and wore ourselves out before going back to camp yet again. It continued raining off and on for a while, so James and I retired early. Woke up in the middle of the night a few times, to a big, bright, clear, moon-lit sky. Breathtaking.

Sunday morning I joined the last of the climbers as they went to Cracker Jack and Casino. It was a rather easy day for most. Tojo used James's single rack of nuts to trad climb a few of the sport routes. That was pretty cool! James followed and inspected and removed the placements on his way to the top. He laughed when he got to Tojo's slung limestone column -- probably not the best thing to fall on right after a rain? It was getting hotter again, and even the clouds weren't helping. More important, we were getting hungry! Walked back out of the canyon and drove home, stopping in Payson for some delicious food at the Pizza Factory.

All in all, an unexpectedly great trip. No climbing for me, but the small explorations and swimming made up for it. And of course, it was great to see Beans and the others again!

Nice climbing day with the boys from CAMRA. Was able to get my 1st lead climb in and hit some nice crag. Feeling better on the rock more and more. Sunny in the morning but a nice short shower and cloud cover the rest of the day made for a perfect outing.

Screwed around looking at scenery and taking pictures near Jack's Canyon on the Coconino when it became obvious I wasn't going to make it out to Chavez Pass.

Hiked into Jacks for some novice level climbing. Climbed the sinker three times. Learned belay technique. The wild grape vines are ridiculously thick in here...up to my neck in some places. We were in at 6am and out by 10. Started getting really hot and sticky.

Got there Friday evening before sundown and found the group and a nice campfire, unfortunately the winds were howling at 20mph with 40-45mph gusts, they didn't calm down all night and the volcanic sand of Jack's is small enough to pass through your tent mesh. Thus everything (including myself) was covered in this nasty black sand in the morning...blech!

The next day, we went to a southern area of Jacks to climb, but we were just getting chewed up by the weather. Went to Casino cliffs, where it was a little calmer, but the sand finally grated my last nerve after watching a few people climb a 5.11c I had to get out there.

Without the wind and sand, I probably would have been in a far better mood.

First outdoor climb.. woo!

Four of us met up in Phoenix on Friday evening and somehow managed to squish about four trunkfuls worth of gear and supplies into the back of the Subi. Always fun to start off a trip with a good game of car Tetris. Eventually we got out of town and made the long windy drive up to Jacks to camp the night before climbing. They weren't kidding about those wind advisories; it pretty much took a group effort to get the tents set up so that they didn't blow away.

Saturday morning I awoke to find myself buried in the surrounding terrain. My tent doesn't have the option to close up the mesh windows so everything outside blew in. The tent was bucking madly and my gear didn't weight that much, so I bailed on it and broke it down with the help of some alarmed passersby. We all tossed our tents in the back of the car and then hiked into Jacks, fingers crossed and hopeful that wind doesn't know how to make its way into canyons.

First climb: Gouda! I find that highly appropriate, considering my infatuation with cheese. :D Next up were a couple 5.10a's and then a 5.8 (Ante Up) that I actually had more trouble on. All climbed out at that point, I took a nice long walk through the canyon to check out the dry creek and as many trails as I could find. The canyon is pretty rife with them for the climbs, but they don't go very far. I returned in time to watch Janelle bust over a roof, but lost my sunglasses in the process. Luckily when I noticed they were gone later on, they were pretty easy to locate. Think I'll be installing a system of bungees from now on so that I stop losing things (ie - headlamp, lens hood, lens cover, etc!) every time I step outside.

Had a great time at Jacks climbing with Janelle, Steve, and other such wonderful people! Was very glad though to get out of there and out of the wind and sand to the peaceful camp spot near Iso...

Took my daughter up to Jack's Canyon for the day, we met friends that were camping there. The Canyon was quite flooded and many areas were not available. Fun day, strong climbs!

We were supposed to try some sport climbing in the canyon, but we were both tired from the previous day and camping the night before so that we opted not to doing anything. I didn't feel like I missed much. It's just a bunch of bolts on a canyon wall. You don't get any practice placing protection. I don't know what I'm doing anyway.

My 1st time outdoor leading, was nice meeting Tim from Flagstaff he made it possible for me to send 3 5.10a's that day. It's great to meet more "good people" Climbers... BTW always looking to network and to find new people to climb with, let me know! ;)
