Bear on trail! Like literally on the trail. On our way back about a mile or so from the trailhead (a little before the junction with the Emmons Moraine trail) we came around the corner and saw a bear cub a little ways down the trail on the side. We stopped and looked and sure enough momma bear was close by. We waited. More people showed up. It was a bear traffic jam. We waited some more. Yelled, banged sticks. Nothing phased the bears. Then they started walking down the trail toward us so we all made a slow retreat. Waited some more. Finally three people backtracked a ways to do some bushwacking to get past the bears and continue along their journey home. That ended up spooking the cub who proceeded to make a dash up the trail toward everybody so we all made another quick retreat further up the trail. Momma bear followed afterwards at a leisurely pace but at the switchback, she didn't follow the cub up the creek but instead turned and continued up the trail toward us. That's when the remaining six of us made the decision to follow the previous group's bushwacking trip down to the trail and away from the bear. So yeah, we all have a great bear story to tell. As for the trail, patchy snow starts about 2 miles in and then is consistent all the way to the basin. Boot trail is easy enough to follow but in the heat the snow is very slushy. We used micro spiked and still slid around a lot. Poles were helpful as well. Bluebird conditions and a bear sighting - a great day to be at the park!

Picked another great day to be on the mountain. With construction on the road to Sunrise after the White River campground, we opted for a hike to Glacier Basin. No bears this year but lots of goats and picture perfect blue skies. Arrived at the day use parking lot around 9AM and there were still spots. A few spots when we left around 2PM as well. Saw a fair amount of people on the trail but it felt less crowded than in previous years. Hiked a little further up the unmaintained trail past Glacier Basin and saw about 6-8 goats which was cool. Enjoyed watching them while we ate.

Bluebird day at Mt. Rainier National Park. The day lot was already full when we arrived around 9AM and so we had to park along the road inside the campground (camping hasn't opened up yet). Lots of skiers going up the trail today. Saw plenty of hikers, too but I think the skiers outnumbered the hikers on this day. Last 0.7 miles of the trail is pretty much snow covered although there are some completely bare sections. We had microspikes so used them but we saw people with just boots doing pretty well. The people in tennis shoes were having more difficulties, especially going down. Views today were superb. There was a sign warning about bear activity when we reached Glacier Basin and for once the sign was right! Spotted a black bear off in the meadow at Glacier Basin. He stayed at the edge and seemed focused on eating as much as possible. Hiked a little further and found a good rocky spot for lunch before heading back. Wildflowers are out but haven't reached their peak yet.

Another hot day on the trail. This trail actually has quite a few sections of shaded trail but in the open sections it was dusty and hot even with a 9AM start. Today we continued on past Glacier Basin camp site to see what we could see. That section was the hottest of the day. The views did improve a little bit the further we went and there was a nice view back down to the large green meadow and pond at the camp site. Scoured the peaks for goats and other large animals but no luck. I guess they were trying to beat the heat as well. Wildflowers are still out which was a nice treat. Plenty of little streams to cross along the hike. Saw a little frog in the same place as we did last year -- maybe it was the same one??? Had maybe a 5 minute wait getting into the park in the morning but it was probably closer to a 30 minute wait when we left. Still, any day on the trail is a good day.

Even though it was forecast to still be smoky in the park, we headed up from Seatlle anyway. Better to be in smoky Mt. Rainier National Park than in smoky Seattle. Trail is in great shape. We took the side trip on the Emmons Moraine Trail on the way up. I think that was a good idea because that section would have been even hotter on the return trip. Glacier Basin trail had more shade and more views than we expected. The views were a little hazy/smoky but still were good. Saw some goats across the river up near Glacier Basin. Lots of chipmunks looking for handouts up there as well.
