I'm no danglin' kopelli, but I occasionally enjoy exploring the non-hanging-upside-down-on-a-rope part of cool canyons. This one seems to be a fun trip for those who prefer the dangerous stuff, but it was also pretty cool from the muscle-burning sand walk from the bottom up. It's closed from the top due to the pandemic, but you can still saunter up from the river. It's about a mile before you dead end at the last rappel and have to head back. A nice side trip if you find yourself floating by.

Our trip leader, secured the Waterholes Navajo permit the day before from the Page office so 8 of us could go. The current beta for the canyon indicates that you need to park within the fence of the tour company at Waterholes for $10. However, because canyoneers tend to get back to the cars late the tour company told us to park across the highway instead. No complaints here because that option is free!

From the top we descended directly into the canyon starting right away with a downclimb over a car and a short rappel to avoid using the strapped together ladder. I hadn’t done what I’ll call the middle section of Waterholes so I enjoyed the way the water had carved out the canyon. It twists and turns as it makes its way. At times there were squeezes to negotiate. Alas, it’s sort of like caving above ground!

Soon we were to where I had dropped into the lower section on my last trip. It was like greeting an old friend. The rappels and downclimbs all familiar just like good friends. It was hard to believe it had almost been four years.

Soon we were to the big pool that on the last trip we had deployed a packraft to safely get across without getting wet. Unfortunately, three of the group had plunged in and went across. However once they were over they were able to set up a zip line (not the same as a guided rappel) over the water. I went first. I had a hard time getting my safety tether on the rope - I had to extend it out fully. Traveling across was a little disconcerting - will it hold my weight? Will I crash into the pool? Everything held and unfortunately the line was too horizontal so I ended up stopping before I was completely clear of the pool. I couldn’t just reach up and grab the tensioned rope and pull myself across because my tether was extended too far. I started to inch my way forward until Jessica could grab my hand and pull me the rest of the way across. Everyone got safety across. Those who were cold from getting wet added some clothes but they were still chilled.

Prior to the trip there had been some drama regarding the rope logistics. Luckily, by the time we started, It was agreed to leave the big rope in its bag so that it didn’t get damaged before we needed it. That was a relief. We checked the big rope in camp that morning and it passed all our quality checks!

We were at the top of the sequence and it was time for Carl and I to work our way down the crack to the top of the big wall. It had been agreed that I would go second to check each anchor as it was rigged. Then I’d be first down the big rappel. At the bottom of the big crack I was able to wrestle my pack off and step over it to see the anchor. Everything looked good. We both agreed that a knot at the end of the short rope down to the anchor that avoided the rope eating crack was a good idea. Carl continued down and started to rig the big drop. When it was time to throw the rope, we got really quiet so we could hear the bag whizzing through the air. There is no sound like that in the world! it was my turn down the short rope. I struggled to get my pack out of the crack and hung off my harness. Soon, I was at the anchor 300 ft above the deck with just a tiny ledge to stand on. Carl’s pack seemed to be taking up a lot of space and since Carl was going to stay there to help the people who were coming next, I opted to take both his pack and mine down the big drop. Besides he had some things strapped to his pack that easily could have became missiles. I got on rappel and struggled to take up the slack with the two packs and incredible rope drag below. I rigged my VT prusik so that if I lost control it would grab me. I added some friction to my rappel device and then took off for a slow descent. Even with the added weight of an extra pack I had to feed rope through my rappel device. I could have taken my hands off the rope and stayed in place! Soon though I got in a rhythm and managed to get down the rope. That cliff is still one of the most stunning cliffs I’ve seen! After I was done rappelling, I gave the next person a fireman’s belay and then went to have a snack and watch everyone else from the far end of the amphitheater. It took a while to get all 8 down the sequence. Next, it was time to pull the rope. I wanted to do it because for some reason there is a lot of satisfaction in watching the rope come falling from 300 feet above.

Soon we were done with the canyon and the packraft began. I had a brand new Klymit to launch. I was very happy to experience the good customer service from Klymit. If you read my Ropes Trail log you’ll remember that midway through the trip a seam came undone and I was losing air as I paddled. That raft had over 5 years of use and I had considered it a trusty steed. My new raft shows similar characteristics to the old one!

While floating and paddling, we saw an Osprey, Heron, Big Horn Sheep, and many bats feeding right before dusk. It was yet again an amazing experience on the River!

After our float we went to a Marble Canyon Lodge where I learned that you can top the Green Chili Stew! Get it on the Navajo taco salad!

Friday: Drove up from the valley and met up with some Flagstaff friends at my "top secret" sandstone slab campsite, near the Glen Canyon dam for what I will describe as a craft beer festival...

Saturday: The wind was crazy and we had to postpone our plans to paddle into Antelope Canyon. On short notice, we opted for Waterholes Canyon. This was my second time there. It's an easy and enjoyable slot canyon (on the non-technical, upper portion). One of the guys in our group is into canyoneering and has done the technical section. Sounds interesting to connect with the CR and pack-raft out. Next time ;)
I noticed that there were new ladders in place since I first hiked this in 2014, when summer rains had flooded out the ladder system. It made scrambling a little more manageable.

Stopped by Horseshoe on our way back into Page. The crowds make me frustrated and when I take friends there now, I leave my camera behind. Anyone know if it has only been crowded since the birth of social media? Or have there always been throngs of tour busses?

Drove out to Alstrom Point. Stopped to checkout Wahweap Creek, which was flowing well, and Warm Creek, which was also flowing! (I was excited to see this intermittent stream going :D ). This drive is just incredible. And driving over the slickrock for the last two miles before the reaching the Point was the highlight. We spent the night here, overlooking the impaired and impounded Colorado River. The view from Alstrom is incredible. This is one of the more epic places I have camped. Definitely worth the long drive.

Sunday: Left the Alstrom Point at 6 a.m., in time to make an early start from the Antelope Point boat ramp. This was my second time paddling into Antelope. Definitely a special place. There's a side canyon that heads to the east, about a mile's walk from the current shoreline. Have any of you HAZ'ers made it all the way to the end of this side canyon? Both times I have encountered some significant pools that I wasn't really in the mood to swim.

Drove back Sunday afternoon with an absolutely mandatory stop at Diablo Burger in Flag.

Good times!

Only did middle Waterholes. The intent was to do the whole thing, but with a wind advisory in effect, we thought better of doing the packraft.

Kevin, Kim, and I did Waterholes Canyon as the first of two adventures over Thanksgiving week. The night before we met at Lee's Ferry and set up the car shuttle and had some Green Chili Stew.

In the morning, we embarked on our mind blowing adventure thru lower Waterholes. The full journey was 8-10 rappels (I lost count), lots of troubleshooting, and a packraft on the mighty Colorado.

The big event is to force oneself down a 100 ft rappel through a crack narrower than one's pack. At the end is a anchor. However, that anchor tends to stick ropes. We in fact found a rope stuck there which we derigged in order to rig a short rappel down to the Edge of the World anchors. We also planned to keep it just in case, and it dropped it over the edge so it would be available for the rest of our trip.

To rig the Edge of the World you are standing on a two inch ledge looking down at the most vertical wall imaginable. I was lucky enough to be the one rigging this rappel. It was an act of great concentration. I carefully locked the rope bag to the anchor. To drop it would be a disaster. I checked the existing webbing and found it sound. Then I rigged my brand new 300 ft rope using a figure eight on a bight as my block. Then I tossed the bag. The noise it made as it unfurled was one I'd never forget. What was missing was the resounding thud that the bag usually makes as it hits the ground. This gave me pause. Was my new rope not long enough? It was time to find out.

As I rappelled, the beauty of the amphitheater was breathtaking. I can find no words to describe what I saw. In least least I can say it was absolutely amazing. All the while I kept in the back of my mind that there was a chance the rope might not hit the ground. While I rappelled slowly - due to the amount of rope below me - I considered the options. I saw the anchor that is used if one only has a 200 ft rope. I figured if I ran out of rope, I could jug up to that anchor instead of the the full distance. Then I kept rappeling. Finally, I could see the bottom. The bag was dangling in the air. I still had no idea how far off the ground it was but it looked close. As I continued the rope stretched a tiny bit and I after I wrestled the bag off the rope I was able to just touch down with my feet. Perfection at its best!

Watching the other two rappel was amazing.

From the big rappel we still had a couple rappels and downclimbs to go to the beach. We reached the beach at sundown and inflated our rafts. Kevin and Kim with their shiny Alpacas. Me, I had my trusty Klymit. We launched as the light waned.

On the River we snacked a bit since we had not taken a break in Waterholes. As the moon rose we started to paddle. The River was flowing slowly at about a mile an hour. We had a dinner date with some green chili stew so we paddled as much as we could.

To see the Canyon in moonlight was a wondrous site. The moon shadows cast along the landscape was glorious. I was filled with joy as I paddled in this peaceful environment. It was enough to make my troubles melt away.

Finally, we saw the lights of the restroom at Lee's Ferry. The clock was ticking and we still had time to make it to Marble Canyon Lodge for a bottle of Malbec and Green Chili Stew!

Third kayak trip to Glen Canyon this summer. (I also did a motorboat tour from the dam to Lees Ferry this summer.) After a night and a couple of meals at Marble Canyon Lodge, we launched in the early morning from Lees Ferry to paddle upstream to 6 Mile Camp. We stopped for a break at Waterholes Canyon, where I hiked up to the first box, but decided next time it will be easier to not be on that side of the river, for we lost ground trying to cross back over to where the current is milder. In fact, there were several places where there either was no eddy to follow upstream, or where we had to cross to where there is an eddy. It was not the easiest paddling.

We finally reached 6 Mile Camp, which is on the west side of the river, in the late afternoon and set up camp. The tamarisk trees are pretty much dead at all these river camps, due to the tamarisk beetle. Although this may be environmentally correct, it makes for a lousy camp with little respite from the hot sun, so we were glad to arrive as the cliff shadows had begun to shade the camp. I hope that willows and cottonwoods will grow to take the place of the tammies.

Floating back downriver the next morning we reached Lees Ferry pretty quickly!

Since this was in mid-August the weather was pretty hot but not as hot as July. As always, Glen Canyon provides one scenic amazement after another, and the camera is always at hand. I am hoping to be working here next tour season, and am looking forward to the experience.

I just realized I didn't post the July trip. Will do that later.

Paddled upriver from Lees Ferry. Stopped here at Waterholes for our lunch break. I took a stroll up to the first waterhole barrier. It was a hot day, and that was enough for me. I'm guessing I hiked about a mile up? And yes, I changed the type of activity from "Canyoneering" to "Hiking" for this post. No way was I canyoneering; I was hiking! And I guessed on the AEG.

After lunch we continued upriver in the kayaks and made camp for the night at 6 Mile. But that will be a different triplog.

Day 1 of our July 4th trip. We explored Upper Waterhole canyon which is a nice, short narrow canyon with nice features. I've read that it rivals Antelope canyon. There were a few tourists which made us laugh at the interesting questions we got. The pictures are from my iPhone because I couldn't find my camera. I was devastated so we had to go to Walmart in Page for a new camera. We then went and staged a car at Lee's Ferry for our through trip of Waterholes. Then to get out of the heat, we went to restaurant at Marble Canyon and discovered they served the best Green Chili Stew and alcoholic beverages! Of course when we got back and unpacked for camping I found my camera at the very bottom of the Outback's hatch. Whew!

One of my favorites for sure. We hired a fishing guide to pick us up at the end, way better than pack rafting out.

Amazing canyon top to bottom. Spending some time clipped in at the "Edge of the World" was a real treat. Our group made pretty good time to the river and then the wind kicked up and made for a strong head wind that made progress difficult. Due to the wind and some other hiccups the paddle/hike out ended up taking much longer than expected and we didn't get back to the cars until 11:00pm. A repeat canyon for sure.

Avoid the rope eating crack!

A few tips:
Don't toss any pull cord at the big rap.
The rope eating crack will eat ropes, I observed no less than 12 ropes stuck in there of various ages.
The graffiti is above the big rap sequence which are: 90 ft, 15 ft, 304 ft.
Harness hang begins to set in at 45 minutes on rappel. However, the rope eating crack can be defeated in this amount of time!

Wild horses do exist!

Thanks to Todd for the idea and the invite.

The 4 of us took 9.5 hrs. to get thru....6 hrs to get to the 320' drop, 2 hrs. setting it up, rapeling & fooling around at the bottom, 1.5 hrs. to hike to the river & canoe down. Elbows & knees scrapped up a lot from the slot sections (shorts & tee's not helping at all!). Only one hole with water in it- slimy green gross water - that one can wade thru chest deep & set up a zip line for the others to stay dry. All the other "Waterholes" were bone dry. No need for wetsuits today. The bid drop isn't that difficult if you have a plan prior to arriving there. Used - in order - 1 - 200' foot rope to rap down to the 1st 90' squeeze, 100' rope tied to a 250' pull cord using the 100' section rope to rap to the edge of the world ledge (15' or so down), & 1 - 350' rope to rap the big drop....with the last guy down tying the 100'/250' cord (tied together of course prior to starting) to the 350' for a pull when we all got down. The 200' rope was bagged at the end of the 90' rap by the second to last person down when the second to last person & last person finished the 90' rap & were standing at the bottom of the squeeze together ready to do the 15' rap. Jim's pirana was so hot that at the bottom of the 350' drop his forearm touched it & now he has this crescent shape burn on his forearm. No problems with the rope eating crack, you just need to take care....Lodge Canyon at Zion had more of a chance to stick ropes.... Standing at the Edge of The World was the coolest part. It's not like the wall in front of you is "pushing you backwards", it has a slight slant up & away so you don't feel uneasy standing there. But the fact that you have to safety in, unrope from the 100' rope, rope in to the 350' rope, unsafety then rap down is a real cool sequence & not one you want to screw up! The distance down is kinda hard to guage and it seems like it took 5 minutes to rap down, with the ground friggin forever away. Worth the effort....now who do I know who has a 400' rope for Insomnia?????

Ah, Waterholes, you stole my heart... and blew my mind! What an amazing canyon. Definitely a great challenge, both physically and mentally. We dropped in early Saturday morning to find the canyon dusted with snow, making it even more beautiful. With heavy packs and tons of gear, we made our way through the many amazing rappels, downclimbs and narrows. We leapfrogged through and quickly made it to the zipline spot where we got held up for a bit as we ran into another group going through. They were awesome and set up the zipline for us so no one had to brave the frigid pond (complete with a dead duck floating in it...).

We continued on to the staging area for the "Big Drop", where we went over the rappel sequence one last time. Before I knew it, it was my turn to do the 3-stager, the part I was most nervous about. Focus, focus, focus. First came the super-awkward crack squeeze down to the first ledge. Here I stopped and took it all in, doing a reality check and asking myself "do you realize you are seriously standing here in a tiny nook partway down a 400' wall?!? I felt surprisingly calm at this realization. Then down to the Edge of the World anchor, switched ropes while an angel kept me calm, then continued on the rest of the 300' down. It was a peaceful ride down, it was unbelievable how far away the ground looked though. Made it down safe & sound, with tired hands and a huge smile... wahoooo!!!

After a clean rope pull, some group shots and a few more rappels, we finally made it to the Colorado River. Rafting down a hypothermic river, at sunset, on a pool toy no less... this was the other part of the trip that I was anxious about. We were not there for more than a few minutes before some nice fishermen in a boat pulled up and asked if we wanted a ride back to Lee's Ferry. I couldn't believe this, as earlier in the day I had secretly made a wish that this exact thing would happen!! But alas, after hauling those packrafts around all day, we decided to take the adventurous route and float the river instead. With the bright moon to light the way, it took us 1.5 hours to paddle back to Lee's Ferry, where some friends awaited to help us load up gear and head back to camp.

It was an unforgettable adventure with an incredible group of people, of which I feel very grateful for! Adding to the day, we also came upon the wall scribblings of the Swiss man who was rescued out of the canyon 2 weeks ago after spending 3 nights stranded in there. How he made it down with no gear and didn't fall/die is beyond me. He had etched all kinds of things into the wall, a lot of it sounded like he was losing his grip on his sanity (understandable, considering the spot he was stuck at). It felt to me like it was his last will and testament, both fascinating and sad to read. But of all the things we found scratched in the wall, the one that stuck out to me the most read: "Love is all one needs." That pretty much sums it all up, don't you think?

Did Waterholes Canyon for the 2nd time this month! The AEG of 2 feet on this is hurting my YTD AEG stats! :tt:

Managed to do the entire packraft in daylight! Very scenic and a lot less headwind this time. Used a Pirana for the first time on a big rappel and liked it., I probably had too much friction at the beginning when using braking position #3 on the 10mm rope, but was very smooth on the 2nd half of the drop.

A lot less water this time in the canyon. Two places where you had to get your feet muddy and wet up to your ankles. Thanks to Vaporman for doing the swim over the large pool so we could zip line over this pool.

So we stuck my buddies BIG rope on the BIG rappel a few weeks back and had been itching to throw another trip together to go retrieve it. With a canyon with the reputation of Waterholes, it doesn't take much prodding to get yearning canyoneers to join ya. :GB:

The canyon was just as amAZingly beaUTiful as ever while being just as pumpkin difficult. Strong canyoneers shouldn't have any major problems, but lesser canyoneers would be seriously spanked and/or spending the night... Loads of down climbing, stemming, tight narrows and short rappels thru most of the middle canyon. All the upper drops can be done with two 100ft ropes while the stemming & climbing gets ever so more difficult the further down canyon you go. After the middle exit, is the sweetest stretch of tight narrows by far. Reminds me much more of a Utah canyon than most of the other AZ canyons. The BIG rappel sequence of 3 drops totaling 400ft was just as sweet as ever, but having done it a few times not it's nowhere near as intimidating as it was in the past. :) It was nice to see my buddies rope still there from a few weeks ago and we used it again and used my skinnier 400ft rope as the pullside. It was def a great feeling when all of us were down safely and the ropes pulled with no issues. :y: A couple more rappels and it was an easy stroll down canyon to the Colorado River. Pumped up our pool toys and made the 4 mile float down river and rolled into Lee's Ferry just as the sun was setting. So much nicer to be doing that during the later afternoon as opposed to after dusk. Hope you guys don't mind another Waterholes photo bomb; such a long, scenic & technical canyon that it's tough to narrow down the pics.
