I decided to hike up to Marys Peak (elevation of 4,097 feet and prominence of 3,357 feet), the highpoint of Benton County. Actually I should call this Marys Non-Peak, since HAZ does not consider it to be a peak.

I took the East Ridge Trail, although I could driven near the summit and done a short road walk instead. Views are limited along the trail, but it goes through a forest of 150-200 year old trees, so I enjoyed the hike. There was noble fir at the upper 500 feet or so of vertical, and lower down was largely douglas fir and western hemlock.

There were some open meadows near the summit, which offered some nice 360 degree views. However, it was a cloudy day so the views were not as nice as they would have been on a clear day.

I enjoyed this hike and am glad that I was able to do it. The East Ridge Trail has great tread with lots of switchbacks, which makes the hike seem much less steep than it actually is.

Drove to the Marys Peak visitors parking lot on the paved Marys Peak Road off of state highway 34 for this short hike. There is a $5 fee for hiking the trails from the parking lot which has two vault toilets. This is National Forest land so a Senior Pass or Golden Age pass is accepted. From the parking lot I hiked the main trail which follows a closed road to the top of the peak with a short side trip to the top of a meadow covered knob for views. From the peak I returned via a connector to the Summit Trail which made it a lollypop loop. The large meadows here are known for wild flower displays in late June to early July and I was not disappointed although it was probably past their peak. There was an abundance of gold Tiger Lilies in several areas.

The views from the top of this highest peak in Oregon's coastal range are amazing. To the west you can see the Pacific Ocean and to the north, south and east you can see the snow capped volcanic mountains of the Cascade Range. However on this day the ocean was covered by a cloud bank below the top of Mary's Peak and the humid haze mixed with a little smoke from a fire in the Columbia River Gorge limited the views of the Cascades. So views were limited on this day but still worth the trip. Mt Rainier, Mt Hood and Mt Jefferson could be seen poking up through the haze and the cloud bank had its own beauty. I have been on this peak in the winter when an inversion layer held down the haze. The Cascade Mountains were visible all the way from Mt Baker in Washington State near the Canadian border to Mt Shasta in California.

Awesome hike with Ron and Scott. Lots of wildflowers. Great sunset. Hit the Crow Bar at American Dream Pizza after the hike. :)

Hiked the East Ridge trail from Connor Camp and then hiked up to the summit and to the grassy knoll for views to the east. Looking west you can see all the way to the Pacific ocean. Very nice hike. Oregon trails are kind to the feet. Almost hit a fawn driving to the hike, saw ten wild turkeys, then two more fawns on the way back. :)
