Wasn't feeling that great, but wanted to test out a new pair of shoes and the weather was spot on perfect. Surprisingly not that busy for a Saturday at lunchtime. Bumped into at best a dozen people all day, mostly at the end near the trailhead.

Lack of rain is quite apparent, the trail is dusty and loose.

Ginny and I wanted to do some shopping on the far northwest side of town and I suggested since we are in the area lets take a short hike up Safford Peak (Sombrero Peak). This was a short 4.7 mile hike that I had done about 8 years ago. I had forgotten just how steep this hike was. The little over 1 mile to the peak with about 1500 feet elevation gain was probably the most challenging hike Ginny had been on. If you weren't on a steep trail you were on a rock climb/scramble to get to the top of this pile of rocks. The hike down was probably harder than the climb up, very slow to keep from falling/tripping. Great views from the summit, pretty much all of southern Arizona and north almost to the mountains in Phoenix. On a clearer day I bet you could see the Superstitions east of Phoenix. On the return hike we took a side trail just to try to make this a 5 mile hike. As it turned out it was 4.8 with 1700 feet AEG. The store we wanted to go to didn't have what we wanted so we headed home after stopping at Rudy's for dinner.

Great hike with fantastic views.

We decided to hike Safford Peak since we were going to be in this area today. Mark said it would be a short hike around 5 miles. I knew there would be elevation gain because it is a peak. I think the views are so beautiful and it is a great workout. The trail is rocky and there are lots of areas to rock scramble. I hike with poles but at a certain point I had to stow them because they became more of a hindrance. It was a slow ascent to the peak but well worth it. We saw several other hikers on our way up. The way down was somewhat more difficult in places because it was easier to slip and slide. This is the first time I got stabbed by a cactus spike and Mark had to pull it out for me. I slipped and in trying to stay upright I encountered a cactus. After that I got my poles back out and was thankful for them. It was slow getting down to more level ground. We had a good day and enjoyed our short little hike:).

Some minor dental surgery had me on dentist's orders to lay low for a few weeks. Finished off two rounds of antibiotics a few days ago and finally felt good enough to hit a real trail. Just been doing long walks around my neighborhood the last week. Met up with someone else from another online hiking group and this was their first ascent up Sombrero.

Not much to report, weather was good and hardly anyone else out here.

Finally had to admit my trail running days are over, replaced my trail running shoes with hiking shoes. My Salomon Speedcrosses had a good run, over a decade and 20+ pair over the years. Didn't make any major moves, replaced with the XA Pro which bills itself as a crossover half running/half hiking shoe. Figured a good place to test them out would be on Sombrero.

Other than testing out new shoes, this was an uneventful hike. Had the place to myself until the final mile and even then only bumped into 3 other people. Even though I've been here almost 6 years now, still find it hard to believe that an iconic looking peak within an easy drive of a few huge subdivisions never has more than a dozen people on it on a Saturday morning.

Absolutely perfect weather this morning, this is my favorite time of year in Arizona. The weather will be decent for another 5-6 weeks and the majority of the Snowbirds are gone. Evidence of that was hitting the trailhead, I was the first car there and when I left at 7:30 AM instead of 8-10 cars, only 3 were there.

Had some volunteer duties and needed to get in a quick hike. Hit Sombrero and did a quick up and back. Going up wasn't too bad, but coming down the trail is back to its usual conditions. Only thing that's changed over the 5 years I've been hiking this is that most of the billiard ball sized rocks that used to litter the trail are gone. Replaced by smaller rocks and a thin layer of sandy dirt that will keep you on your toes on the descent. Ended up scree skiing a few times coming down.

Gorgeous Sunday with light winds, clear skies, and pleasant temperatures. A great day for my 112th summit on Sombrero. Probably my last summit on Sombrero for a very long time, if not ever, as I relinquishing my residency this week and thus begin my fairway tour. Tickets available at Ticketmaster! I'll be bouncing around a few more weeks in the area and state on that tour enjoying a few more old favorites, raging and raging, before I giving in to that dying of the light.

Trail is in full spring looseness with lots of scree. Slid back while going up, at one point. With forecast heat building, this very likely would have been my season's last, were I not departing. With the high frequency use and the spring dry in full effect, it usually gets worse until the rains come in summer.

Lots of fond, but also not so fond memories here. I am pretty sure this is my 4th most hiked hike in Arizona, and really anywhere. I think that is respectable, and it is a solid hike. Well, save for that lose trail. That isn't so solid. I'll miss it.

From snow yesterday on Wrightson to 90 degrees in the desert today. Ah, Arizona. Quite the extremes. Getting a little hot to keep hiking this, and with the dry conditions the trail is deteriorating, so hopefully I have 1 more hike on this over the weekend. Took some photos of the flowers and views, just because. #111

Today is about as nice as it gets. Low 80s, dry, sunny, and light breezes. Perfect hiking weather for me. The forecast for the next 2 days, not so much. Blowing dust followed by an extreme cold snap on Saturday.

So, the big CSP2ML hike was postponed to a later date, and I therefore felt the need to get out today and get 100,000' for the year. I did. It was very nice. It was also my 110th Sombrero summit.

100,000 feet is a big deal for me as back in late 2007 when I realized that you could log every hike here and track the yearly totals, I arbitrarily set out to get 100,000' in 2008. It seemed like a big round number coming from the far east, and yet also an attainable number. 1 million being absurd, of course. I did almost 2.5 times 100,000' in 2008, and in every year since I managed to hike well over 100,000', often well over 2 times and a few years 3 times that amount. So, it can be recorded that in every year I set out to do so, I hiked over 100,000 feet in Arizona (or New Mexico). Some have lists of peaks, some numbers of partners, some miles, and I had AEG.

Season has peaked. Still some lupine and poppies, but the brittle bush is drying. The violet and purple globe mallow looked good.

The sky was clearing and it was rather pleasant, so out I went. Trail is nice and stable after all that rain. A hummingbird was buzzing the summit. It was there last week, too. Lots of new snow visible on the Ritas.

Did this hike with Ana. She hadn't done many summits up until this one and she did very well, making it to the top after saying she wanted to stop at 98% of the way up. It was very windy at the peak. There were so many wildflowers of all kinds. I even found a wolfberry plant at the top which had berries on it. Most of the other wolfberry bushes did not have berries. I probably have done 20 summits of this peak over the years.

Stats:
--------
Distance (roundtrip) = 4.76 miles
AEG = 1602 feet
Strava moving time = 2 hrs 21 mins
Strava elapsed time = 5 hrs 35 mins

It was a little windy, but still pretty nice. I wonder if I will be able to get 2 more summits of this in during April so I can get to 110 summits.

Ended up being half decent. A little windy, but not the forecast 40 MPH gusts that were forecast for Kimball. I noticed this area has two types of blue or purple globe mallow, but no orange.

Clouds were getting thick, but it was still a pretty nice enjoyable summit, as always. With the forecast, it looks like it could be a rest weekend. High winds on Saturday and then storm chances on Sunday. Oh, well. Hope I can still hit 100,000' for the year in the next few weeks.

Too nice of day to waste. Plus, I want a rest day before I hopefully head out on Wednesday.

Heard some hawk cries as I was starting down, and when I looked back I saw two hawks fighting in mid air, a couple hundred feet below me and a few hundred feet out. Those steep cliffs around the summit make for some good views of that sort of thing.

I was a little sick last week but was starting to feel better by Thursday and so I had been optimistic for Kimball over the weekend, or this if the wind was high. I ended up feeling worse and then did nothing for 4 very nice days. I finally felt well enough today for this. I hope I can hike Kimball soon, and a few other things.

Trail is lose again and I wonder how many times I will be able to do this before I throw in the towel. I doubt I can do 30,000' this month, but I was still hoping for maybe 25,000' of AEG. If I am not doing some beaters on Sombrero, that is not too likely. Oh, well.
