A few weeks back, Linda suggested we do this hike. I don't know why, I mean it just sounded crazy to me. Anyway, I agreed to consider it, and after reviewing the track, I mentioned to her that this looked like one of those hikes where someone could really get hurt, but she told me to "toughen up...", so here we are.

We hit the trail at 0741 & about 55 deg. Within a half hour of that, I was officialy sweating as the climbing began. Soon enough, we decided to bypass the steep main trail for the much steeper off-trail route, via the Flatiron. For the ascent, we would follow a track that was based on a mule route of many years ago. A large part of this old section is either bushwhack or bushcrash, marked with a couple of short, but uncomfortable climbs. Before we knew it, that tough part of our outing was in the mirror, and we could now focus on dropping 135 ft to the canyon bottom, just to regain it on the other side  . On the upside, that left us with only 1,250 more ft of AEG to reach the peak, and a whole mile in which to do it :rollH: .

After a 15-ish minute break at the peak, we started back. I know you're all thinking "it's all downhill from here", and while you'd be correct, I must tell you that it's a tideous go. The return went by with a lot less huffing & puffing, but not any faster than the ascent. We did see and talk to quite a few people on the descent, which may have slowed us down a bit, but overall, it's just a slow go.

Eventually, we got back to the TH, and hadn't needed to get out the 'Bleed Stop', so we did pretty good. Thanks Linda for driving down to drag me across the open desert, and up and down the rocky canyons again. Until next time...

For the record (and to refresh Matt’s memory), Matt texted me on Dec 22nd saying he wanted to hike Pusch before the end of the year. I said if he could wait til after Christmas, I could join him.

We got started around 0745. While it was windy when I left Phoenix this morning, there was no breeze in Oro Valley when we started, so it felt fairly warm. We turned off towards the flatiron, then Matt informed me the route he wanted to take up the ridge to reconnect with the main trail had some brush. Oh yes it did. Brushy, thorny, steep, loose offtrail. We did survive, and getting back to the main trail was a relief. Losing some elevation was a fun little treat too.

Once back on the main trail, we took our time for the final 1300’ climb to the summit. It was still so much easier than what we had done on the offtrail. Nice breeze at the summit, but the views were hazy from dust. Still good though.

The descent was straightforward, and mostly a matter of not falling. Lots of chatty hikers on the way down.

I’ve worn the Aku Rockets on a few hikes now, and have been overall quite impressed. Grip is incredible, I did not slide at all today, no matter the terrain. 10/10 for sure. I still have not worn them on wet surfaces, but dry surfaces are amazing. They are a stiffer shoe than my Solomons, but seemed a little more flexible today vs my first couple of hikes in them. For short, steep hikes, I’d rate the comfort an 8/10. The one longer hike I did in them was less comfortable, but I may try them again on a longer hike now that they feel a little more broken in. I do wear moleskin on the back of my heels since it seems like they might want to create a hotspot while hiking uphill. As long as I remember to cover my heels, it’s fine. I will probably get a pair to leave in Idaho for the steeper hikes up there. I still doubt they’d become my default for higher mileage hikes though.

Good to see Matt again, and a fun morning!

Slow cruise up Pusch Peak, just trying to get a baseline to see how far up I could make it in an hour with a heavier pack than I normally train with. Didn't summit, turned around at the one hour mark. Put in for a backcountry permit for the GC in the fall, so need to start training with more weight on my back.

It was a warm one today and made worse with absolutely no breeze at all.

Started at 5:40 am, 10 minutes late, trying to beat the heat. The false summit is nasty. We were making good time upon reaching the summit, where the sun was shining bright and hot. It was nice and windy which offset that, however. I had breakfast and we headed down, trying to beat the sun. For some reason, my legs didn't get as shaky as they have when coming down Pusch and it was fairly manageable. Wind and clouds made the way down quite bearable, in a turn of luck. This was a good one today.

Starting to turn into an annual tradition to hike up Pusch the first weekend after the trail "officially" opens for the season. Turned out to be a perfect day for it, stayed in the 60's and low 70's the whole day. Didn't see anyone going up and finally ran into the beginning of the train of people about a mile below the summit.

I'm on Christmas decorating duty today and needed the most ROI from a hike that got me home before 8AM. Quick spin up for 45 minutes, turned around and poked my way back to the car.

Made the news a few days ago that there was a mountain lion prowling the grounds of the high school next to the trailhead. The lion is still definitely there. Saw fresh tracks and the lion was marking rocks for me to see.

I've been patiently awaiting the end of the annual closure of this trail to end. Nice to get back up here. Trail is in decent shape and isn't too overgrown at all. Just did a quick up and down to the top of the peak and was home by 8:15 AM.

The visibility today was very good and the views from the top were excellent. I wish I had a good camera because it really was that pretty and my phone does it no justice. The benchmark had some new stamping that reads "GGS 2023". Going down was as bad as I remember it. By the end I would have to mentally prepare myself for each drop my foot had to take (hopefully that makes sense).

Needed a quick hike that was close to the house to burn off some holiday cheer from Christmas. Strolled easily up for 45 minutes and came back down.

In prior summers there has been abundant rain by now and the grass is thick over the trail. Another positive to being dry this summer is that the trail is wide open and the grass thin. No complaints from me, there.

The forecast looked to be a bad one for higher terrain and after so many weekends on Wrightson I could use a break. This seemed like a good alternative. Preston joined me for about 2/3 of the way up and it was a pretty good hike despite the sun coming out when we expected cloudy conditions. I still can't believe I did this as much as I did in the past. The trail seems steeper every time I go down, but I still love the summit.

The trail is really worn in, so there is no reason to get lost out here. This was "discovered" 5 years ago, now it just is. Saw 6 other people hiking the Pusch section, more on the loops. Sometimes I can't believe I have hiked this as much as I have.

Since I was making the rounds on several of my old frequently hiked hikes; Humphrey, Elden, and Piestewa, I thought I would give this a go. It was seasonably warm, but still humid, and a generally nice time. However, this is one rough hike, and unlike the other old favorite, this is now a sometimes hike. Pusch is just too steep, rough, loose, and steep to be both enjoyable and hiked often. I thought otherwise 8 years ago, but no longer.

It is still a little over grown on the trail higher up, but if you know the route you should be okay.

The plan was to hit the summit, but the overgrowth is so thick I ended up off course. Where the trail took a bend, the most obvious looking route ended up being a game trail. After floundering around trying to find an alternate route and getting cliffed out, decided to play it safe and retreat.

Lots of activity on the ridge to the north. Kept seeing the DPS helicopter making multiple passes and saw firefighters on the ground waving around. Asked a friend on SARA what was going on, but said that rescue was being done by the local fire department.

Back on December 31, 2020 I hiked Pusch Peak for the first time. It was super cool. I took a picture of the benchmark and forgot about it. Over the summer, I looked more into benchmarks. I found out how they were everywhere and how unique the PUSCH benchmark was. I learned that it had reference marks, which I had no idea about initially. I studied Google Maps photospheres to get a feel of the layout of the summit and I analyzed pictures of the benchmarks from the geocaching page for the benchmark, knowing the exact location of each benchmark in relation to the layout of the peak. After this effort, I had to hike the peak, but I would have to wait until cooler weather, and therefore winter. As the days passed, Pusch Peak sat there towering with it's impressive orange and white granite cliffs.

I decided to get back onto trails a couple of weeks ago. I decided that I would hike Wasson Peak and then 2 weeks later, Pusch Peak. As the day neared, I checked the weather forecast, Saturday had a high of 67, following a rainy Friday, perfect conditions for hiking.

Today was the day. I got water, oranges, my bag, hiking poles, and tissues. I got to the trailhead at 8:37. It was 40 degrees outside. My hands were freezing, holding onto hiking poles. I quickly traversed the forest service maintained Linda Vista Loop part of the trail. All of the dirt of the trail was moist. Most of the rock faces on the trail were sandy, making them treacherous to go down. Making it to the start of the trail, I saw the welcoming sign for what lay ahead, "Not a forest service system trail beyond this point". The trail quickly steepened and I took in the views of the surrounding area. I saw two rock climbers, at the base of the Pusch Flatiron, getting ready to climb the cliff. My hands had got to a reasonable temperature now. Looking down into the canyon, I saw pools of water and even heard a tiny trickle. I continued up, stopping every once and a while to look behind me at the views. Someone on the way down said that there was a group of 15 heading up the peak in front of me. (It was actually ~25) I thought to myself, "Oh great." I continued on, going uphill towards the peak. I found a spot where there was a footprint of a bighorn sheep on the trail and on a rock outcrop next to it a pile of bighorn sheep scat. Moving on, I noticed the trail steepened a bit more and became rockier and a tiny bit more technical. I made it to maybe 100 feet or so in elevation below the summit that I remembered the trail being flatter up here. It was just as steep as the rest of the trail. Once I was getting close to the top, I saw my first glimpse of the other side of the mountain, containing The Cleaver and Bighorn Mountain. It was pretty cool. I continued on for the last little bit and too the summit. There were upwards of 20 people up there, with only 1 or 2 in the large hiking club group. I thought to myself, "This sucks." I quickly found reference mark 2. I went back to the summit to try and find reference mark 1. I went over to the location if it. It should have been right where I was. I checked past photos of it and I still couldn't find it. I decided it was where a little discolored dip in the rock is. I took another picture of the triangulation station and then went to the south summit. I ate 3 oranges there. I then took a group photo for the hiking club and started heading back down. I immediately noticed that going down was quite a bit harder than going up. Rocks became slip traps and moving along was slow. On one particular, small rock section I placed my foot down on the rock, slipped and I slid down the little section. I slid down on the the left side of a bush and my right arm had scraped up against a dried up stick with thorns all along it. The cuts were minor and I cleaned up my arm with some water. Immediately after standing up I noticed my knees were shaky. I continued on, down even more sandy rocks. This part sucked and I feel like my hiking poles were just a nascence at this point, rather than helping like they did on the way up. I put them in my pack and continued down. From this point on I was periodically accompanied by music being blasted by either the church or the school and being echoed off of the cliffs. I saw one of the two climbers repel down the final portion of the cliff. I finished up the hike, thanking the dirt surface of the Linda Vista Loop trail.

This was tiring I had fun. :) :)
