About a year ago, my first friend in AZ was diagnosed with a rare and deadly bone cancer. He fought a good fight and is in remission now. During the dark days when "demon's blood" coursed through his veins, I often sat with with him in the hospital room talking about the good times while hoping against hope that there would be more to come. During one of those days he asked me if I would take him hiking if he got through this. I said I would.

Today was our first day hiking. The damage caused by months of chemo rendered his legs just about useless so Ed has to learn how to walk again. We started on the nice easy trail out of weeks wash and took a nice easy stroll through the desert landscape on a beautiful morning.

Welcome back Ed. Let the good times begin again!

My original plans canceled, so I decided to do a full moon hike. Nothing but me and nature as the moon lit up the night sky. No flashlight, no cellphone, no camera... just me and the desert. :)

Went out late this morning wandering around the Superstition foothills off First Water Road in search of Giant Saguaro's that might be in the blooming stage. Turns out I'm still a bit early, only found some budding Saguaro and a few blooming but they're way up on the top.

Got to remember though....... this is snake season so you've got to look down where you're about to place your foot, especially if you're not on a trail. Good thing I remembered this rule in time as I almost stepped on a Rattler napping under a small bush and it's rattle was under its body so.....no rattle warning. :o Guess I'll go home and watch some NASCAR.

Lots of blooming Cholla and Prickly Pear, Saguaro are still a week or more away.

On every trip into the Superstitions, I find another Gold Mine. Today the mine was filled with Memories. I can not wait for the next trip.

I chased the rainbow out the Apache Trail and explored the washes off First Water Road. With thunderheads rumbling directly above I didn't stray too far from the car. I was hunting for lizards and other critters but came up emptyhanded.

There was no cloud cover this morning so I decided to do something short. Weekes Wash seemed like a good idea. Since there's no trail you can explore at your leisure. I started by taking the wash south of First Water Rd to a filled in mine shaft. I came back via a jeep trail and explored north of First Water Rd. Then I saw the tail end of a rattler on the way back to the car. The last three diamondbacks I've seen haven't rattled at all. This guy made up for it in spades. He was still rattling when I was fifty yards down the road.

Mileage is a pure guess.

Headed out to Canyon Lake in hopes of hitting a storm. As I passed Superstition Mountain I in was awe and drawn in. Headed to Massacre and noticed the storms were actually receding. Odd for summer but oh well. Figured I'd check out a section of wash I was missing in the area from previous roams. Glad I did!

Explored the area around 2156

Although seriously abused this is the desert I enjoy most along with the western flank of the Four Peaks.
