The trail starts at the back left edge of the pulloff. FR 259 was very muddy as it had poured rain the previous night, and since we got there at 8:45 AM, the sun hadn't come out to dry it up yet.
It's about 1.5 miles to the creek from the trail head. This time of year was beautiful, and lush. Lots of flowers, and very green. We also had perfect weather, it was about 60 degrees mid-day, and the sun mostly stayed behind the clouds. The descent/ascent is very exposed so it would be pretty rough on a hot sunny day.
Once we got to the creek, we crossed and continued to follow the trail for about a mile or so. We kept getting further away from the creek, so I decided we should double back, and do a creek scramble. I'm not positive, but from reading the maps, it appears that following that trail (tr225) would have put us out in the HorseThief Basin campground area.
The creek scramble was fun, but be prepared to help out your dog if you bring one. I had to lift my dog 4 or 5 times to get her over small rock outcrops. We followed the creek crossing twice more before coming to an area I couldn't get the dog around, and my girlfriend wouldn't cross, so we decided to lunch there. I'm guessing it was about 3/4 of a mile down from the point where the trail hits the creek.
While the creek was impressive, I was expecting bigger waterfalls. Overall though a great hike, and I would highly recommend it. After the hike, we went into Crown King to look around. Cute little town. |
