I found this to be a very frustrating hike to locate. I followed option one and found nothing, and at option two i did end up eventually on what seems to be the old road they describe but not really easy to find. This is easy hiking, but not easy to find. More importantly finding your way back out is a bit tricky. Be sure to mark your own trail. The leaves are perfect right now but without GPS you cannot find the items mentioned in the trail description at all. It's a pretty far dirt road trip from Phoenix for some fall leaves but the red maples were beautiful and the dogs liked the hike a lot.

Wow...I dont think the description of this is too clear, but it was a GREAT loop with awesome fall leaves. I started at the hang gliding site at the top and went down to 105a, then 106 which took me back to the top. This left only about a 1/2 mile walk on forest road to my car once i was back on top. This is a perfect day trip...close to Phoenix, fall leaves, and a nice hike back up. WOULD RECOMMEND that you wear pants as the trail is overgrown in many areas. My legs got pretty scratched up.

I hiked about 2 plus miles into this canyon to go to Bear Wallow Creek. I hiked along the North Fork which had no water in it. It's possible to connnect to the Reno Trail and make a loop, but I did not do this due to time constraints. I would not recommend this (you would have to walk 2 miles on FR 25 back to your car at trailhead). There were lots of dead trees and the trail was not very nice. Some hikers were going in when I left to the Schell Canyon Trail which intersect this trail. Lots of others noted on the register that they liked it, but I had been to Escudilla the day before and it was much much nicer. You can drive the FR 25 to Reno Lookout though, which is a nice view for no hiking at all. Worth a look.

The fall leaves were the most incredible. This is an awesome trail, worth the drive. Took me 4 1/2 hours to drive from nw valley to trail. Only thing that could make it better is if it were a loop rather than a single trail. Wide, great scenery, and all the leaves are yellow right now for fall. Highly recommend.
