Always wanted to do Flatiron and my brother has interest in it so we planned on doing it. Trail is kinda easy in the beginning but gets more difficult as you reach a more rocky area. Indeed as people have said the trail is not easy to follow! Blue painted dots try to keep you on the trail but those are few and far between.

The bowl type area where the water has eroded it to a smooth surface is an awesome area to movie around but after that area we got confused to walked on the wrong trail after seeing a blue painted dot. We now spent the next 2 or so hours hiking the wrong way and trying to get back on the trail before sundown. Oh well, the next time we know what to do. Still a very fun trail to do, hard sometimes with a big camera with you! I decided to not bring a tripod again and luckily I didn't as it would have very difficult doing some points of the trail.

Finally got out to do some hiking with the new camera. First stop Peralta Trail. I've never done this trail but was excited to see Weavers Needle. Trail was pretty easy, creek beds were dry but where there was standing water the mosquitoes were breading away like no other!
Sometimes the trail was confusing but we made it with little effort. Pretty good hike in my book. Weavers Needle is incredible, especially at dusk. So awesome.

I bought a Nikon D700 but quickly changed my mind and went back to Canon. I love this Canon 5D, I can't live without Canons L lenses. Sorry Nikon. The Canon 24-105mm f/4 L IS is a very versatile lens. For the full frame Canon 5D camera, this is probably the perfect walk around lens. Great colors right out of camera, hardly any tweaking to be done! Sharpness is where the Canon 5D shines and I didn't use a tripod on any shots.

I gotta say this is a pretty good trail albeit its not exactly a 'hiking trail'. Lots of information about different trees ect from around the world living in this little oasis. This was my lazy way to see autumn leaves and didn't expect much from this place but I was pleasntly surprised how cool this place is. Giant Gum trees from Australia, a nice lake, cool gazebos, a little creek, lots of wildlife ect ect. Very convienent right off the 60 highway near Superior. Pay the $7 and see this place, its worth it.

This is probably now my favorite trail in Arizona and I didn't get to do much of it is the sad part. I took Mt. Lemmon trail only to where the Meadow trail ends and took Meadow trail back to the trailhead.
The trail starts off pretty easy with many flowers near the trail. I'd say the trail difficulty level is pretty easy..it's basically just walking sense theres not much elevation to be gained.
Although the trail has many parts where the forrest is burned down it actually contains a lot of beauty in it. The grasses and flowers get much more light than when the forrest wasn't burnt so they're very green and grow everywhere on the ground. Ferns, wild flowers ect ect. Very nice.
Awesome views out towards Tucson with many smooth looking rock formations, some remind me of pictures of Yosemite National park.
The Meadow trail is great too in a different way, the biggest trees i've ever seen are on this trail. Not sure what kind of trees these are(look like ponderosa, dougles fir, spruce maybe) but this is a great way to see a big cluster of tall ones.

This trail might not be as shocking and awesomely dangerous as some trails around Four Peaks but for shear beauty of trees, mountain views this one is my favorite. :)

Took the trip down to the springs, started at 3pm. Hiking down was so easy I didn't even noticed all the time that had passed. Reached the first springs around 5:15. Very beautiful, seeing the springs bubbling up was very cool.
Ran into a group of campers assumed they were boy-scouts. I was still trying to find the 'main spring' that had the huge jump with the rope that a lot of people have pictures of. Unfortunatly time was getting outa hand and it was nearing 6pm. I knew we just made a huge mistake by continuing to look for the main spring when we had to hike all the way back up.
Note to all: it takes around 2 hours to get down to the first spring so don't ever start the hike at 3pm and expect to get all the way back up the trail before dark!
My girlfriend had to use her cell-phone as a flashlight for about an hour!

Went to Four Peaks with the intention to maybe get on top of Browns peak. I kinda knew I wouldn't be able to go up the scree chute as it was incredibly windy. I drove there on friday the day before the cold front was coming down with the great chance of rain in the Phoenix valley...on the drive there I noticed rain had fallen and I think I noticed snow in the mountains before I reached Globe.

Started the hike about 1:30pm conditions were pretty cold and very windy. Hike went good up till the saddle. Once I reached the saddle I made 2 choices to either try up the chute or bush-wack up it around the back. I started going up to the chute area and it was so incredibly windy I could hardly stand up. I gave up, hiking around the back seemed like a huge task and gave up even trying it :?

Going to Browns peak saddle is still worth it. I've made it up on top of Browns peak before and when I got up to the saddle I looked up near the chute and it still amazes me that I reached the top. Its a huge mountain and only being there I remember how big it is. No picture of the mountain can match the feeling of being at the saddle and looking up on it.

I still highly recommend going up to the saddle alone and taking pictures. Its very much worth it..and continue to Amethyst mine if you like which is very cool.
I still want to reach the top of Browns peak again and will try again sometime soon.

----------------------------------------

I wanted to make a follow up triplog to my last one. My last triplog was a day before the snowstorm/rainstorm happened around the valley. I thought it just rained alot after the day I went to Browns peak trail and didn't even think i'd see any snow in the mountains around Phoenix. I was incredibly surprised to see snow all over the Superstition mountains.
I planned on going to Devils Chasm but going into the mountians I quickly figured out this was a massive snowstorm that happened and going to Devils Chasm wouldn't be possible on a dirt road. So I headed out to Roosevelt lake for a road trip to see all the snow. Its beautiful around Roosevelt lake and love seeing the Four Peaks from the east side with the lake.
I added a few pictures of the Four Peaks with so much snow on top of them and wondering if anyone has went up into there since all the snowfall. :)

Its Christmas eve and I decided I would attempt to get to the top of Browns peak. Its a crazy thought as I have never been on Browns trail to begin with..and no experience with "rock climbing" of any sort. Sure I've been on the top of Squaw Peak(Piestewa) but thats a hike as in hiking a trail...no rock climbing on there.
So back to Browns trail, a friend asked what I was doing and told them I was going "hiking" for exercise. They decided to come along not knowing what they were getting into.
I took the east rout on the 143 road and proved to be much easier than the west intrance. I highly recommend taking highway 87 to highway 188 down to 143. Atleast if you're driving in a average car.

Got to the trailhead at 1pm, it gets dark at like 5:30 so we had time to do it. Hiking the trail was calm, beautiful day... not hot or cold. We got to the Saddle at around 3pm... we took our time.. being at the saddle was just awesome in itself...gorgeous views as everyone who has been there knows. Looking up at Browns peak was just astounding...a picture can't tell you how massive this mountain is.
I decided we were going to start going up farther and said "we'll go up as far as we can".
I made a big first mistake from leaving the saddle...the trail that goes up isn't exactly easy to follow sometimes and we ended up climbing the first scree chute...maybe some people know what i'm talking about...theres the main scree chute to the top of Browns peak and theres one just before it. So that first chute we did was hard in itself to say the least, I thought that was the main chute but as I got to the top I quickly figured out the "main" one was right in my face and it looked massive. Again some reason i'm insane to do it but we continued up to the main chute.

Here we are now climbing up the main chute, it starts off just ok, but quickly becomes something thats quite insane to be doing and some weird drive is making us do it...remember we have absolutely no rock climbing experience. I very well know if I lose my foothold or a rock comes loose from my hands I could die easily...and anyone whos been up there knows thats no exaggeration. I remember saying outloud " oh my god" " what have I got myself into"...
and at no point on the chute did we ever say "we gotta go back down"...
about an hour later we did it..we made it to the top. I could not believe it... we made it on our first try. There was no celebration really...the view was astounding from the top, I could see Humphreys peak to the north with no snow on top of it. Took some pictures, a small video. We stayed on top for only like 10 minutes, I was terrified about the thought of going down... I quickly realized that we had to start going down and after we started going down my fears subsided and we made it down safely. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be going down but still VERY tricky in some spots. By now the sun is almost going down, we have maybe an hour of sunlight left to get back to my car.

I'm extremely proud to have climbed to the summit of Browns peak, it is my greatest feat in my life. I regret putting my life at risk like I did but I will never regret actually doing the climb..if that makes sense..
I'm not sure i'll ever do some rock climbing again of this sort, but I know theres no greater climb than this in the Phoenix area. I would highly recommend this hike to the Saddle, but after that its all on you and if you have no real rock climbing experience you're putting your life at risk. Do it at extreme caution if you dare to do it. :D I'll add pictures of this hike.

Curt

NOTE: I did not find the Ammo can with the log book. Not sure I just missed it somewhere on top but I didn't see it.
