| no partners | | After a late start I took my new Arizonan friend up to Horton for his first legit Rim Country hike.
Arriving as late as we did parking was surprisingly open. We parked at Derrick TH and wandered to the creek near the Parking lot, thus missing the Derrick TH. I knew the Horton TH was just up the road a bit so we went that way for a 'clockwise' hike along the loop.
Being in the throes of late spring the trail was warm and dry. The wind warnings for the day were made true by a few gusts stirring up the dust occasionally. The elevation as compared to Phoenix reminded me that I am not in prime hiking condition but I soon found my pace.
Lots of people coming down the trail. We made our way to the spring for a break and to check out the source of the spring itself. Then along Highline where we saw no one, not a soul. Stopping only a few times to check out potential camping spots and to test my ancient GPS.
Meeting the Derrick Tr intersection, found the signage intact, and we made our way down the trail, again with no people seen. Apparently this used to be a Jeep trail but that must have been some time ago as the path doesn't look like one at all except in a few spots. The descent was a nice change and made it to the TH in short order.
Not a bad experience for my 1st legit hike in a couple of years and definitely a good start to my friend's intro to the Rim area. Getting my hiking senses back will ongoing. My perception of time was ok but my effort and distance judgement definitely needed calibration. I'll just attribute that to lack of recent use. |
