Watch closely for the first trailhead/jeep road as you come to the wash about 5 minutes from the parking lot -- the correct trail is the one to your left. There's a wood post and the remains of a large cairn just before it. We had a nice 30 minute out-and-back along the wash before we realized we'd missed the trailhead. From this point we made it to the summit in 75 minutes. As you head up the mountain, watch for the painted arrows. Unfortunately, someone was overzealous with the paint but if you follow it you'll have no problem getting to the top. When you get to the plateau, continue straight to the East to arrive at the mailbox. You'll be tempted to head left or right to one of the more obvious peaks. Coming down was fast, about 35 minutes -- just be careful in the steep areas and watch for loose scree. If you're looking for a short but challenging hike, close to town, with good elevation gain, this one's it. |
