Second part of the dinosaur tour. It was hot, humid (for the Grand Valley), and the kids were tired so we called it halfway and headed back to the cars.

Another tour of Dinosaur Hill. Might start knocking this one off the list after May, especially with kids. They were melting during the climb.

I thought we were done with Chaco, but some folks who weren't feeling great the night before from the heat had missed Bonito. So a group of us gathered up and headed out to Bonito again. No solstice activities from the park, so again we had to wait until 9 for the gate to open, but we got there not long after the sun had started casting shadows. We missed most of the internal alignments in the building but it was obvious where some of them would have been. After we finished the trail, it was back to the VC for touristy stuff and then on the road again. But we weren't done with Chaco after all...

Got some Blake's on the way home and ate at the picnic area at Aztec. Down to two vehicles now. The new museum displays in the VC are amazing, and of course the structures themselves are still impressive. It was great to get to finish off the trip with a stop at Aztec, which I hadn't been to in a long time.

No solstice activities all weekend and the main loop road gate was closed until 9am, so that meant we got a late start on hiking. We originally planned on hiking up to the Bonito Overlook, then heading back to the VC for souvenirs and such in the AC before doing Bonito's big shaded rooms and then a Wijiji sunset hike. Well, once folks got on top and saw Bonito, they wanted more. So we went up the hill to New Alto and Pueblo Alto in the heat, before descending down the crack. I was the last one down, and everyone was clustered in the shade of the vault toilet near Kin Kletso - the only accessible shade around. The plan changed again, and we headed for Pueblo Pintado to give folks a chance to cool down in the AC and get away from the crowds.

We arrived at a deserted Pintado and took a stroll around the site. Very striking location, I had forgotten how prominent it is on the flat landscape. We had a local friend with us too, so we got some info on some contemporaneous small sites in the area and spent some time there. My archaeo friends were over the moon. Lots of really interesting things on the ground, but it was bloody hot so folks were starting to drop out. We decided to head back to the campground for some rest and then do some afternoon hikes. One of our group had a flat tire on the way out, so our plans kept evolving.

After fixing a flat and reinflating a spare, cooling down, and regrouping in the campground, we headed out to Bonito with two hours left before the park road closed. The sky was clear when we left but as we drove the loop road, thunderheads began building to the south and the northeast in dramatic fashion. Sunset was amazing and being in Bonito just with our group was amazing. We decided to finish up and head over to Chetro Ketl for some insider stuff our local friend could show us.

Seriously the longest sunset ever. We got to see some amazing stuff that isn't generally open to the public, but spent most of our time gaping at the amazing sunset. The alpenglow on the cliffs and walls was unreal, and rainbows from salmon clouds framed by Chacoan doors were out of this world. Absolutely the best time I've ever been at Chetro Ketl, it was out of this world. After getting back to the parking lot, we realized we had about 20 minutes before LE came to close down the sites, so we headed over to Pueblo del Arroyo.

We cruised through Del Arroyo. The light was fading but we did (and enjoyed!) the whole short trail. There were two other vehicles in the lot as well, so we weren't the only ones trying to beat the rangers through this site. The sunset had basically faded and we'd had a big day, so after loading up we headed back to camp (deciding not to do Casa Rinconada) and instead resting and relaxing before our departure the next day.

Started out the day by doing the Una Vida loop and ascending the cliff to the petroglyphs on the spur trail. Already knew it was going to be a scortcher.

After a ten-year hiatus, I returned to Chaco for the solstice again. I have a batch of friends up here, many archaeologists, who haven't been to Chaco and I figured it would be fun to show them stuff, even during this strange COVID time. Started out by hiking up the Fajada Overlook trail from the campground for sunset when we arrived on Friday.

Long work days, high temps, and lack of a car have curtailed my hiking. Still, got out on the trail for a bit today. Lots of prickly pear in bloom. The sky seemed hazy, like there was a fire somewhere. We had some thunderstorms roll through over the last couple of days, so it wouldn't be surprising, but InciWeb is showing nothing active besides prescribed fires that may or may not be occurring. So it remains a mystery.
