Friends kayaked out on Friday afternoon, so we took a hike on Saturday. Came across a strange ?art installation called The Globe Theater on an old gravel bar. It isn't present in the satellite photos so I have no idea when it was made, but likely sometime in the last decade. Very elaborate, a lot of effort and energy put into it. We also hiked up a side canyon to a small seep where a fence lizard was drinking. Surreal landscape.

Cruised out from Camp to admire a cliff and see how deep two slot canyons were (spoiler: they were not very deep).

Over the course of a week kayak-camping in the Bullfrog/Hall's Crossing area I paddled 13 miles. Almost all of this was in and out from the camp area and launch ramp, but I did take a side trip up Lost Eden on the way out on Sunday. Windy inbound on Tuesday and the last mile of Friday morning, but overall the conditions were pretty nice.

Hiking day at work, so went up Kodels all the way to the head this time. Wanted to find a route over to the next canyon, but the only pass would be quite a bushwack. Explored around an old gold mine, which was neat, and found some historic inscriptions. No water in the creek flowing, but 2-3 potholes along the way. No flowers over here yet.

My last backpacking trip was to Chaol Falls in 2011, almost ten years ago, and I've been missing it. I have been trying to get back out for the last two years but between COVID, equipment failure, and a knee surgery I haven't been able to make it happen. Finally all the things came together - weather, gear, COVID vaccinations, good health. Got to get out and get to the backcountry of Canyonlands in a way I've been wanting to for a long time. Now to keep the momentum going and get some more backpacks in this year - maybe I'll even head to the mountains (finally) this summer.

I know this isn't as long and flowery as my prior backpacking triplogs, which is slightly disappointing to me, but I am so tired after getting back today I don't have the energy to make it more exciting. Sorry!

After setting up camp at CP5 we took a quick excursion over to The Joint. Got back just before a storm rolled in and we all ate in our tents. It cleared up right at sunset, and then got nasty again until around 2am. Still, The Joint area is cool and could be an easy place to get lost.

In preparation for a short backpacking trip in Canyonlands this weekend, I decided to head out to the Monument and do a longer hike. The day was gorgeous, so I knew I couldn't get away with a longer trail outside of the Monument - too many bikers on the trails close to me. Definitely was good to get out and put some real mileage on, especially since it is lighter later now, and previous weeks have seen commitments and weather hamper my outdoor activities. Deer, bighorn, and various birds along the trail, and not a single other hiker to be seen at any point except on the Liberty Cap portion. I'll end up writing up the Upper and Lower bench trails as some point soon.

Accompanying a friend of mine to an appointment. Got to Montrose early so we killed some time at Cerise Park. This is another one of those hikes I'll have to write up when I get the time.

Wasn't feeling great and the 500 foot gain in a quarter mile really thrashed me. Back up in the canyon the hike was a breeze and the canyon itself is very pretty. Def going to do the hike again when I'm feeling better and do a longer loop in the canyon.

Got in one last hike to close out February with my neighbor, her boyfriend, and another mutual friend. Great day to get out and about, and the apres hike was excellent as well. No flowers yet but it seems like spring is around the corner.

I'll update this to link to the guide once I finish writing it up. Sketchy as hell going down into the canyon - north exposure and steep, so ice and sharp plants were my constant companion. Once I was down in the canyon the hiking improved rapidly, until I came across a deeply incised arroyo. There is not much of a defined trail on the alluvial bench, so I missed the easy way down and had to take another ridiculously steep plunge down a side arroyo. Gave me the opportunity to see some flakes of stone used as tools hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Once I finally got into the main canyon bottom the hiking was a breeze and I cruised downcanyon for another mile in peace. I finally followed a side trail up out of the canyon onto a bench to a place that is very important to the Ute people and their ancestors. Across the canyons was a narrow jug-handle arch. Not sure if there is a connection between the two, but it was very pretty regardless. The wind picked up and I saw my first Pinon Jays of 2021 as I headed back.

Once back on the first bench, below the drop-in from the rim I was determined to find a better way back. Being alone with no cell service in an area that doesn't see many visitors, I had no intention of risking my wellbeing climbing back up the icy hell. I clearly wasn't the only person with that idea, and I soon found a worn game/cow/human trail up a mostly snow-free slope. Back on the rim the trip was quick and easy to return to the trailhead. A great hike, but clearly not the most ideal time to do it.

Decided to pop out and see what this trail was like. It has been on my radar for a few years and after doing a couple trails overlooking this basin it really started to bump up on my list. I had limited time this afternoon, so this worked out perfect. I headed down and got back up while the sun was dropping low in the west but before it had gone behind the rim of the Monument. I think next time I'll combine this with either the Echo Canyon down portion or as part of a larger Little Park complex hike.
