Taking kids hiking again. Tough out here to find cooler/high-elevation hikes during the summer to take kids while still being inside the NCAs, especially during a pandemic. Made it happen, and had a great trip with the kids. Winded since hiking has been limited recently. Hopefully the temps continue to decline and I can get out more.

Mounted bike medic for another protest again, this time met with a bunch of armed white nationalists. Strange times.

It has been too damn hot here in the Grand Valley for any sort of real hiking recently, plus I've been occupied with my work providing support for protests here. But I decided to take a week off and bake myself half to death in an even hotter place, rural southeastern Utah. Met up with a couple other scientists for some socially-distanced fieldwork in areas I've been working for over a decade not. Got to complete a project (mapping a tracksite digitally) that had been on the radar for years, and we found a new skull eroding out of the rocks that we're going to have to come back for. I just hope that when we come out to carry the rock saw up the hill to this site, it isn't 100+ degrees again! :o

Acting again as a medic, walked in solidarity with with people of color in the community as a medic. A teach-in was held at Colorado Mesa University with almost 600 people. Momentum is growing and I am very glad to be a part of this.

I've put lots of my hiking plans on hold as it has gotten hotter and there is a more urgent need for me to focus my energy on the peaceful protests happening around the Grand Valley. I was going to be a bike-mounted medic today but ended up walking most of the time as there were some stragglers who got separated and I wasn't going to leave them behind. A very positive outcome, lots of energy and support and the city council was packed with tons of non-white folks. GJ isn't like some of the cities that make the news, and the focus of these protests is to be proactive; so that problems in policing don't begin to spiral out of hand. We've got a chance to make a real positive change and set the way forward for rural communities, and I'm glad to see organic youth leadership driving this change and honored to be able to play a role in it.

Quick jaunt in my quest to get to 100 miles this year before June - a big accomplishment after my knee surgery last year. This was just a quickie.

Decided to get back out into a canyon and put some more miles on while checking some other trails. Basically followed Tuesday's route but moved a bit faster by myself and I also hopped up on the Miramonte Rim trail instead of staying on Klunker. As soon as I got on the rim it started drizzling, but it was actually pretty enjoyable with the rain. Got a bloody nose somehow near the middle of the rim and it didn't stop until I was on Holy Cross. Thank goodness I had some TP stashed in the pack! I think next time I'll do Klunker to Miramonte Rim and complete the rim loop, then cross over on Bunker. Probably will be about the same mileage but will help complete my mental map - and the map/descriptions here.

Decided to push myself a little with both the heat and the distance, since I've been sticking to slightly shorter hikes recently since my boots are starting to give me blisters (not a good sign). Set out a little before 2pm and cruised down the Second Thoughts trail. Didn't see anyone else on Second Thoughts besides the lizards. Approaching the big climb out of the canyon near the end of Second Thoughts I did see two dirtbikers on Twist-N-Shout but they didn't drop into the canyon. Rested for a couple minutes at the junction then cruised on up Twist-N-Shout towards the trailhead. Ran into a family at the Short Shot junction, who were having varying degrees of fun biking. Didn't see anyone else on the rest of the hike. The sand on the hike out on Twist-N-Shout was a pain but not terrible, and the clouds helped cut the heat. I think we're nearing the end of the desert wildflower season up here, most things are dying.
