Using the North McDowell Access Area, past Alma School & Happy Valley, I decided to hike this North Scottsdale favorite. From the parking lot, the trailhead is well marked. After a heading west, the trail turns and immediately the elevation gain begins. The trail continues to make a steady gain until approximately a mile and a half from the trailhead you gain the ridge which provides a great view into northeast Scottsdale. As you down climb a little, you will enter a valley with an amazing collection of boulders of all sizes.Enjoy the view and begin the final climb to Tom's Thumb on your right.

I had the need to go see some Indian ruins and after checking the HAZ site, I found this hike along with the Honanki Ruin hike. Before you decide to complete this hike be sure to call te Forest Ranger station @928-282-3854 to make a reservation. However, the ranger told me tat te reservation process is pretty "loose". Also, be sure to purcase te $5.00 daily pass required for all autos.

At the parking lot, take the trail first to the cliff dwellings. The dwellings are impressive and the trail allows you get very close to the actual dweelings. After viewing the dwellings, take to the trail back to the visitor center and follow the trail to the Rock Art Trail. A very sort hike takes you to large area set back in the cliff walls adorned with a large selection of Indian rock art.Cool!

I consider this hike along with the Palatki Ruins hike to be companion hikes since they are located approximately 5 miles apart NW of Sedona.
At the parking lot, cross the road and sign in at the Visitor booth. Next follow te trail until you come to a fork in the trail-stay left. In a short time, you will reach the dwellings. The trail allows you to move across the various rooms were you will see a great example of Indian Rock Art.
Another cool Indian site!

A very popoular hike in the greater Phoenix metro area. The peak used to be known as Squaw Peak. Unlike hiking Camelback, there is plenty of parking. The hike can be crowed at times, but many people often stop for rest, so you can make good time if you wish. The trail is well defined and when you reach the top, you are rewarded with great views of Camelback and the city of Phoenix.

This is a hike I frequently do given that it is easy to reach and in spite of being a short hike, one can still get a good workout in. While only 3.5 miles in total because of the elevation changes (going up, then down Pinnacle Peak and the neiboring mountain) makes for an enjoyable hour long hike. While it can get a little crowded at times, the trail is wide enough to get around the people.

This is a great hike if you wish to experience Indian ruins without a long drive or hike. Once you find the turnoff off I-17 you will see your goal on top of the mesa to the east.
After climbing over or going under the fence, continue to make your way up the hill with the cliff as your guide. It is easier to actually acquire the cliff about 50 yards north of the point of the cliff or otherwise you will be experience the joy of scaling a cliff.
Once on top, enjoy the ruins and the viewss. By sure to descend the cliff south of the ruins and look for petroglyphs amoung the rocks.

As part of my goal to summit the highest point of each state, I was looking forward to the AZ HP. The trail head is located a few miles outside of Flagstaff at the AZ Snowbowl. As you start the hike, you will pass under the lift to the top of the mountain. While the lift is tempting, use the trail for a more enjoyable experience.
The trail is well defined starting out but when you clear the tree line, it starts to become vague, so be careful. Once on top, you will find a canister with a registry next to a rock wall wind break. Sign in to the AZ HP. If the weather is clear, you can see the Grand Canyon! Also, be careful for afternoon lightening during the summer.
Great hike.
