Went to Lookout, another great morning in the McDowells. I might have seen Grace and tortoise when I was coming down.

Went down SK to Phantom. We started at 7PM, which was an hour later than we planned, but it was great. We had a great sunset and the trail to ourselves. We stopped in Flagstaff on the way, and took some leftover pizza slices for dinner at Phantom. They stored well and tasted great. Our time down was 1 hour 48, same as a couple of weeks ago. We made a few stops on the way down to look at the beautiful sunset and to play tourist. We had light until just after Tonto tipoff.

After a short sleep, we departed at 3:50 again. We went up the SK, something new. We saw our first North Rim bound hiker in the first mile. After that we saw no one until halfway up, I think we were in the Redwall switchbacks. We were actually predicting when we would see our first people, within 2 seconds of the prediction, we turned the corner and saw people! Shortly after that, we had our first mule train.

Overall we enjoyed SK. It did not seem more difficult than BA, and it was an hour shorter. Usually on BA, i try to predict when I will see the first guy with a large coffee in hand skipping down the trail. Then I look for the first group with a gallon jug of water, walking two(or more) abreast, trying to hold hands the whole way. There was none of this on the SK. Most everyone shared the two-way trail quite nicely.

My usual phantom departure antics. I get lost and fumble around trying to leave Phantom in the dark. I walk on top of a few deer, then get to BA campground, and fumble around some more. Once I cross the bridge, then it is the dreaded beach sand. Then I get nervous about mountain lions. I see other hikers, but unfortunately I pass them, so now I am cougar bait.

At the water crossing before you enter the Devil's Corkscrew I heard what sounded like a sheep or goat, but not really. I assume it is some type of toad/frog. So I moved closer and was right on top of it, but couldn't find it.

I am really inspired by the recent triplog of the hermit/tonto/bright angel and am eager to do this one.

Also, this website is great. I really appreciate it. I wish I were more skilled at using all the features.

Very pleasant until panorama point, which begins the Vishnu Schist, the hot stuff! I read that this trail was originally called the Yaqui trail, but was later re-named for the nearby Kaibab Forest. In the Paiute language, Kaibab was their name for the Grandiose Candiose, and it means mountain lying down.

Stayed at Phantom, stew dinner, departed 3:50 via Bright Angel.

Edited to reflect the light jog that took me down.

Never sure how to classify my activity, I hike the ups, and jog the downs and flats. Possibly could be called hog or jike. Usually from Bell Pass down, I jog the whole way.

Saw a small herd of javalinas. A couple scurried away, but one was curious and "he" and I looked at each other for a bit.

Keys found. After you park, then go down through the wash towards the trailhead sign, at the top of the wash, to the right is a tree. Someone put some keys on a branch. I hope they find their owner.

We started at 6:00 AM, and when we returned to the parking lot, a nice group of Sonoran Preserve Stewards were going for a group hike. In the steward newsletter, it said the construction for the improvements will begin in September and continue through May 2012. There will be 125 parking spots, 10 horse trailer spots, dry toilet, with water coming at a later date.
