We stopped in Flagstaff on the way, and took some leftover pizza slices for dinner at Phantom. They stored well and tasted great. Our time down was 1 hour 48, same as a couple of weeks ago. We made a few stops on the way down to look at the beautiful sunset and to play tourist. We had light until just after Tonto tipoff.
After a short sleep, we departed at 3:50 again. We went up the SK, something new. We saw our first North Rim bound hiker in the first mile. After that we saw no one until halfway up, I think we were in the Redwall switchbacks. We were actually predicting when we would see our first people, within 2 seconds of the prediction, we turned the corner and saw people! Shortly after that, we had our first mule train.
Overall we enjoyed SK. It did not seem more difficult than BA, and it was an hour shorter. Usually on BA, i try to predict when I will see the first guy with a large coffee in hand skipping down the trail. Then I look for the first group with a gallon jug of water, walking two(or more) abreast, trying to hold hands the whole way. There was none of this on the SK. Most everyone shared the two-way trail quite nicely. |
