This was a quickie hike. One of my fellow hikers was recovering from the flu and another is nursing a bummed up knee. Darn, it is hell to get old! It was a pleasure to get out and stretch my legs.

We took the Sutherland out of the CSP to a small trail headed east to see if the falls were flowing. They weren't :-( There is a faint cross over trail marked sporadically with cairns headed north from the trail to the falls. We took that and went up hill to the north until we met up with the Sutherland again.

We continued through the barbed wire gate and took a snack break-- snack breaks are awesome!

This is a nice hike to take friends who are just getting started in AZ hiking. It is interesting enough to get them hooked. But, the route doesn't make them discouraged.

We took a friend who is new to hiking. He had a great time. He said it was "just right" for his first hike.

My hiking pal and I decided that we needed a good hike to start the New Year's Day 2013. We started from the Sabino Rec Area parking lot at 8:10 AM in the frosty morning. We hiked up the tram road seeing fellow hikers, runners and walkers enjoying the holiday.

The air was crisp. The scenery was breathtaking and everyone's mood was upbeat! We ran into snow on the Eastfork Trail. It wasn't enough to make the trail treacherous. But it did add a fun aspect to the hike ;)

We only saw two other people on the Eastfork and upper Bear Canyon Trail. One very military looking man was flat flying down the trail! We saw his tracks in the snow all the way around the loop. Another lone hiker was enjoying the day on the upper Bear Canyon.

When we reached the Seven Falls turn off, we made a side trip to the falls to relax and eat. After a nice break, we hoofed it back to the parking lot. With the added side trip to falls, we put in close to 18 miles.

This is a great hike! It is long but not particularly difficult. We took mini breaks to take photos and admire the beauty all around us. We didn't take our planned lunch break at the Eastfork-Bear Canyon Trail junction as there wasn't anyplace dry enough to sit down. There is lots of water everywhere in the canyon right now and the Seven Falls were flowing nicely!
Namaste,

A gorgeous hike with 2 hiking friends. We took frequent breaks on the way up as one of my pals is having allergy/breathing challenges. So, the trip up took almost 2.5 hours. We took a snack break at the dam. I hiked down by myself as I had an appointment and time was getting short. It took me about an hour to get from the dam back to my car.

There wasn't any running water. However, there was water pooled in several places leftover from the weekend rain. : rein :
Happy Hiking!
