I highly recommend that you complete this trail in a counter-clockwise direction. The views are spectacular, especially as you come through the saddle on the David Miller Trail. The Dry Creek trail is gradual and shaded. The forest is mostly AZ cypress, ponderosa pine, and huge old growth manzanita. Dry Creek was flowing beautifully. The creek at the bottom of Bear Sign Canyon was also flowing but much slower.
The David Miller trail is strenuous and steep but the view as you cross over into Secret Canyon is amazing. Take a moment to rest and enjoy the view. The immensity of the view is exaggerated because of the contrast with the enclosed feeling the Bear Sign Trail.
The Secret Canyon Trail is more exposed to both wind and heat. Again, the creeks in this canyon are flowing. Crossing can be a challenge on this trail. The creek was wider and deeper than Dry Creek. We were able to scramble over rocks; trekking polls were very helpful.
We had planned to hike into the Secret Canyon but a section of the forest was closed due to a fire. All in all a very nice day hike, highly recommended. |
