Loved seeing the water seeping out of the mountainside - and even a smooth pour at one point on the trail. Big hello to Coco and her "daddy" and thanks for helping us at the end of our trek!

Another hike starting with Mt Lemmon #5 and continuing on the Meadow Trail (reverse of what we did a few weeks earlier) Lovely views and fun for the kids to be on familiar ground.

Temperatures were CHILLY this day, about 68 with a forecast of rain, so we knew we would be short on time. We took a very leisurely time heading down the Butterfly Trail, stopping to admire the views, the plant life, and to wonder where all the butterflies are ;-). It took us about 2 hours to go only 1.5 miles to the Crystal Springs trailhead, which we followed a very short distance to find a little place to hunker down and have a quick lunch. By the time we were packing things away, the rain had begun, and while it wasn't heavy with all the tree cover, it was enough to make us all rather wet and cold. But no one was complaining! We definitely want to do this one again and spend a little more time travelling!

Our second hike in our "escape the heat" weekend routine. We started on the Marshall end of the loop, thoroughly enjoying the shady path through trees and past a flowing creek with lots of little blue butterflies! Coming up toward the saddle, the trail got a little more difficult for us newbies to follow, but we found our way thanks to the help of some passing hikers and continued through the Aspen portion of the loop. The burn evidence was a sad sight, and we were running low on water at this point so I'm sorry to say the last bit of the trail was not as enjoyable for us (well, at least for ME!) as the first. But still a beautiful day spent in the mountains! Loved coming out to the parking lot where lots of families were playing in the woods and setting up picnics, feeling like we had really accomplished something that day!

Total hike time was 2 hours, making the loop from Meadow Trail to Mt Lemmon Trail #5. Actual time for the Meadow Trail portion, however, was just one hour, hence that time is shown in the details. This was the first of what we hope will be many lovely day hikes this year! Had a bit of trouble actually finding the trailhead, perhaps partly due to the fact that the trail sign is completely hidden behind brush. For those who might be as dense as we were, the trail starts right next to that huge chainlinked area, not at the end of the parking lot as we first thought. Once we found the trail, it was very well marked, and we enjoyed the shade as we trekked through sunflowers and ferns amid the tall trees. Saw a Mourning Cloak, Painted Lady, and Pipevine Swallowtail on the journey. The burn area is beautiful in its own right, with tall skeleton trees through which you can see a great view. The old growth pine trees in the second half of the trail are amazing! It took all 4 of us to hug one. We did not return back along the Meadow Trail, but instead made the loop with the Mt Lemmon Trail #5 for the return, where we encountered a view that rendered us all speechless, as we took the mini trail down to the rocky outcropping and stood on the edge of the world! Waved hello to a couple brave souls who were on the tall rocks across the way and then continued on our hike, passing more burn area but still lovely with new growth, some wildflowers, and a flock of goldfinches that enjoy roosting in the bare trees. The last stretch of the hike proved to be tiring, particularly for the younger set, but everyone agreed we will do this hike again!
