The dirt road getting to the cave was wet and had some big mud puddles to get through before getting there, but we made it through without any problems.
Once we entered the cave it was incredible to say the least! Seeing not only your breath in the cool air, but the moisture droplets in your breath that seemed to linger in the air (and show up in many photos!). Loved how open the tube was in many parts, seemed like a subway tunnel, if you're claustrophobic you shouldn't have a problem in here. There wasn't a whole lot people in there today which was nice, we'd walk some distance before hearing/seeing anyone else. We were able to turn off our lamps and not see anything, not a spec or glimmer of anything and the rocks seem to be a great sound damper, it was kind spooky to imagine getting out of this place without lamps...It felt like this place was just recently formed, seeing how the lava turns, cracks, folds, ripples, it was unreal.
Had a great time here, did see some graffiti which was unfortunate but I definitely will be back to share this location with some family and friends who I know will enjoy it! Ended the day trip heading over to Sunset Crater area and visiting the Wapatki ruins and the lava field. |
