I have lived on Acoma Drive since 2003. Shadow Mountain is my backyard. The trails here have much to offer in terms of views and various flora/fauna. I have seen at least 3 pack rat dens between the Acoma Drive trailhead and Cave Creek Road. You can sometimes see coyotes here near dusk. Evidence of the coyotes is not hard to find, as they hang their feces conspicuously on low branches of the bushes along the trails. Although being in the park after dark is a no-no, somebody once told me that the view of the fireworks show put on by the local church is awesome on 4th of July ;)

This is a beautiful trail. It was a nice surprise and diversion from a planned hike of trail #110. If you follow trail 110 from the trail head at the top of Mingus Mountain, it is a continuous descent along the side of Gaddes Canyon. At the point where 110 finally crosses over the floor of the canyon, you will find the marker for trail 9037. The thing that was so compelling is that at this end of 9037, the trail remains pleasantly under the tree canopy... and if you're hiking in August, this is a desirable thing :)

Took the family up to Mingus Mountain to escape the heat in Phoenix. Since we did the Woodchute trail last August, decided to try Gaddes this year. We started at the trail head at the top of the mountain. The trail here is mostly open air without a lot of tree canopy. The hiking gods smiled on us and brought some nice puffy clouds to block the summer sun, right as we got out of the car to start the hike. We immediately bumped into some other hikers, who said they were scouting out the area for a future elk hunt :? The trail begins a slow descent along the canyon wall. We encountered an alligator juniper with an unusual appearance: it looked like it was growing around another tree. Shortly into the hike, we came across the spring. The spring is fenced off with barbed wire. The spring is also capped off with a galvanized steel barrel with a sheet steel top. We saw some broken/rusty old iron pipes laying around the site. We continued hiking and hit the first switchback that drops the trail to the canyon floor. This is a gorgeous section of the trail and is nicely tucked under the tree canopy. Nearby is the point where trail 9037 intersects with 110. It is a nice diversion and worth the extra time to explore. The whole trip was filled with interesting flora. We saw wildflowers and observed 3 different types of mushrooms growing along the trail. The return trip was all uphill.. and nobody complained :)

Woodchute did not disappoint. In fact, one of the most pleasant hikes I've been on in Arizona. Reminded me somewhat of some spots I've hiked along the Appalachian Trail.. except you won't see Red Rocks on the east coast! This hike can be characterized as pines and oak - road noise - views - butterflies - some more road noise - more views - wild flowers - one odd prickly pear - Alligator Juniper - Blue Jays - more incredible views. Did I mention outstanding views around every turn? Tolerating the noise from 89A for the first mile and a half or so is soooo worth the rest of the hike. For the most part, the trail follows ridgeline and saddles, so it doesn't matter if you are looking left or right, you will see for miles. Hardest part was avoiding tripping because I couldn't keep my eyes on the trail :) Don't be fooled by the small parking area that is still 0.7 miles from the trailhead.. follow that last segment of dirt road. Enjoy!
