Right away as the sun was coming up, the views were inspiring. Looking east, the Sups were a mere silhouette against the colors of the sky. As I left the parking lot, first one out, I immediately left the trail and hiked up the creek for quite a ways. Eventually, I scrambled out right before the creek sides rose to over 15' and made my way through the brush. Shortly thereafter, I met up with the trail and started the ascent up the north side towards Massacre. I am not a speed hiker and rather enjoy stopping and looking around and behind me for photo ops. I am always in awe of this great land we call home. So much diversity in plant life and terrain in such short distances. Anyway, the trail had accumulated some ice patches and the mountain glimmered with numerous ice flows making for great views. The trail is nicely marked and where it was vague I added a few cairns here and there. I made my way up further and found a nice flow and took pics + video. At this point, I decided to turn back and thought I followed my same path back...hmm...maybe not. Somewhere along the way, probably not paying attention, I was off the trail and making my way across giant boulders, brush taller than me, and avoiding a skunk scavenging for food. I was never worried that I was lost. Lost, to me, is not knowing where you are at at all. I was simply not where I thought I was...lol. Having already passed and descended quite a bit of elevation, I decided to hack my way through to some lower elevation to catch back up to the trail. Along the way, I ran into another gentleman, Bill I think, forgive me I'm terrible with names, and he was doing the same but on the way up to the falls. He wasn't certain where the trail was and suggested I scramble up a pretty steep incline to where he had just come from. I said what the heck and wished him well and off I went. And, what do you know, there was the trail near the top of the ravine. Made good time coming down and really enjoyed this trip. |
