Happy New Year! :D
The first day of the new year started at about 7:15am at the Crosscut TH. 29 degrees and a stiff wind made me appreciate my 3 layers, hat, and gloves. Right away as the sun was coming up, the views were inspiring. Looking east, the Sups were a mere silhouette against the colors of the sky. As I left the parking lot, first one out, I immediately left the trail and hiked up the creek for quite a ways. Eventually, I scrambled out right before the creek sides rose to over 15' and made my way through the brush. Shortly thereafter, I met up with the trail and started the ascent up the north side towards Massacre. I am not a speed hiker and rather enjoy stopping and looking around and behind me for photo ops. I am always in awe of this great land we call home. So much diversity in plant life and terrain in such short distances. Anyway, the trail had accumulated some ice patches and the mountain glimmered with numerous ice flows making for great views. The trail is nicely marked and where it was vague I added a few cairns here and there. I made my way up further and found a nice flow and took pics + video. At this point, I decided to turn back and thought I followed my same path back...hmm...maybe not. Somewhere along the way, probably not paying attention, I was off the trail and making my way across giant boulders, brush taller than me, and avoiding a skunk scavenging for food. I was never worried that I was lost. Lost, to me, is not knowing where you are at at all. I was simply not where I thought I was...lol. Having already passed and descended quite a bit of elevation, I decided to hack my way through to some lower elevation to catch back up to the trail. Along the way, I ran into another gentleman, Bill I think, forgive me I'm terrible with names, and he was doing the same but on the way up to the falls. He wasn't certain where the trail was and suggested I scramble up a pretty steep incline to where he had just come from. I said what the heck and wished him well and off I went. And, what do you know, there was the trail near the top of the ravine. Made good time coming down and really enjoyed this trip.

Today's journey has finally made me decide to buy a 4WD. Headed out to Woodbury, never been there, and made it a few miles on FR172 with my Altima. Decided not to take a chance to damage the oil pan and had to pull to the side. Bummer. I was still 9 miles from the TH and took off walking down the road for about 2-1/2 miles and turned around. Several hunters passed in 4WD's and it was deflating not to make it to the TH. So, now I am on a mission to find an older model 4x4. Even though I didn't make it to the TH, I still enjoyed being in the solitude of the area. The only negative was the amount of cans, bottles, wrappers, car skid plates, and other random trash along FR172. If anyone is interested, I would be willing to participate in a cleanup along that road. If we could get 5-6 people together, we could take a few hours and pick the eyesore up. Pretty sad. :(

HOW TO TURN A 4 MILE HIKE WITH YOUR MOM INTO NEARLY 12 MILES....My mom and I had no intention of hiking this far today. But get her and I together and you never know what's going to happen..lol. So, our "plan" was to hike Dutchman's Trail from Peralta TH to Whiskey Spring and back or Dutchman to Coffee Flat and back. Well, we chose the Coffee Flat route and the scenery kept luring us further and further. Each cross trail we came to we would say, "just a little further". Finally, when we reached Coffee Flat Creek we decided to round out our trip and continue to Dearhorn Spring and on back to Coffee Flat Trail. I would rate the overall difficulty as easy and the length a little tougher. There is a lot to see along the way such as the changes from saguaros to chain cholla to ocotillos to decidous Cotton Woods. I highly recommend this trip. And that's my :M2C:

I would consider this an easy hike. It has decent scenery, water at the springs, the ranch, and views of Weaver's needle and Four Peaks. It's easy to get to from First Water TH and requires a $5 Tonto pass. Rangers were very friendly. We should all be thankful for their services.

An amazing hike. The views are incredible and hiking to the top of the mountain gives you views of the San Francisco Peaks. I took roughly 200 pics. Not a hike for the faint of heart. Elevation change is substantial. This is a must hike in AZ. Went up Friday night and stayed at the Wildflower Inn in Sedona for $60 (king w/fireplace). Free continental brkfst then off to trailhead at sunrise.
