Spent the afternoon checking out the Latodami nature center trails, specifically the green trail. We started from the small parking lot on Reynolds Road and walked the perimeter of the North Field. This important meadow habitat that was once cropland for the Latodami Farm was covered in grasses, berries and seeds to help the wildlife through winter. Didn't see as many birds as I would have thought, it was a warm 50 degrees out. We walked by the remains of the windmill which was used to pump and store water for the farm. We'll make it back to explore the other trails and spur of the Rachel Carson that cuts through the lower portion of the nature center.

Started the Butler-Freeport trail in Butler. An interesting town in decline. Lots of cool old architecture. The houses on the hills, while mostly in need of repair, are amazing and beautiful.

Things go up hill from the trailhead almost all the way to the Derailleur Bike Shop Cafe. Past some cool generational farms..mostly unfarmed. A sign that reads "Rifle range next 3/4 mile" but then gives no additional instruction on what that means. I stayed on the trail but might have peddled a bit faster. A little nip in the air but nice. The fallen leaves blowing through the trail was picturesque. I can't wait for some snow. The ride home took a 3rd of the time. I was able to capture some good video since peddling was optional.

A nice flat nature trail. The Rachel Carson west side trailhead is here also. I may need to do some covert seed collection for our yard. Gotta keep those native birds chirpin' :)

Stopped by to check out the Stewart/Schlag log house from 1800. Not its original location but not far. When you only needed shelter, 12x15 was probably sufficient. There is a retention pond from what appears to be both water run off and natural springs. About .25 in we came across one of the feeder springs and zigzagged across some bridges as we may our way up the hill. Foliage is changing. Chipmunks and squirrels every few feet..black grey and brown squirrels. Kinda short but you could do a few loops. There was at least one offshoot we didn't explore fully.

A short hike with some nice wilderness. I've seen deer and turkey, just not on this particular hike. Plenty of squirrel and chipmunks. The stream had a little water flow and oodles of greenery. It's hard to believe at times this area is in a drought and the trees are stressed.

This is the first part of the Rachel Carson trail. Maybe 1.5 but the first part includes crossing a busy street so we started here behind the music store. Canopy covered walk. We took one of the no named offshoots that circled us around for some more distance. This goes through to north park so we'll follow-up again. No bikes on this trail.

From the lake the trail splits off in short | Medium | Long after the marsh. We chose the medium which took us up and over the hill and along the shore on the way back. Completely shaded the whole way so it didn't feel like 90.

staghorn sumac are all vivid shades of red and maroon. Black walnuts, bigtooth aspen, birch, and some hickories are
various shades of yellow. The wildflowers, including golden rod and New England asters, are in full glory.

Great little trip. I am being told the water was high due to rains. It was only about a foot deep in some areas. We entered at the Harmony Canoe & Kayak Launch and got out near the Hartzell School RD bridge.

A great day with the kids. From the parking lot there were steps leading down to the waters edge. Not that steep but we did pass some adventurers who were unprepared and lamenting their decisions. A well worn trail along the waters edge with plenty of opportunities to access the water. The mill is a cool historical view into how things were done. The areas around the dam look like some good kayaking. Will need to look into that. Not sure if the kids care but we saw the covered bridge that was on our check list of things. We decided to take the road back up but I'll probably return so I can explore some more of the trail system out here. It was 91 out. The locals were not enjoying it.
