The old US60 highway, called the "Queen Trail" here, starts just south of Queen Creek on the east edge of Superior. Starting in Superior, you pass the restored Magma Club (restored in 2011), which was built by the Magma Mine for social events. The asphalt has been torn up, replaced with pea gravel, from the water tank to Superior, by Arizona Water because they buried their water line (2011). The old road passes some former mines that produced silver, lead, zinc, manganese, gold, and copper. I believe that the Monarch Vein is the mine out area to the right (walking uphill) before the new bridge. The road crosses under the new Queen Creek bridge. The road cuts through the Paleozoic sequence of Bolsa Quartzite, Escabrosa, Martin, and Naco limestones. Looking to the south you can even see some Whitetail Conglomerate lying below the Apache Leap Tuff (you can see the vitrophyre basal layer). This road can also be started after the Queen Creek Tunnel on the south side of US60. Park at the east pullout after the tunnel and walk west (left of guardrail) to reach the road. |
