Wanted to do a hike today that I could see some wildlife but also if I got tired could rest on a comfortable bench. This trail offers both of these things. Got to the trailhead close to sunset. Was only out of the car for 5 seconds and we were greeted by big horn sheep. Only about 20 feet away. After the sheep and my dog had a staring contest we continued on to the top. After a long minute of hiking and some climbing we reached the pyramid tomb thing. As I gazed into the sunset I saw what seemed to be giraffes and wildebeests in the distance. A very rare sight to see these animals in their natural habitat of the phoenix desert. After a few photos and a long rest on the benches we made our descent to the car.

Perfect weather for this type of hike plus being in the shade most of the way worked out really well. Had to leave my 4 legged friend at home. I felt bad because he gets so hyper and excited when he sees me packing up the hiking backpack. Not a dog friendly trail though at the top. A good friend came with me and she wanted a hike that would make her legs burn the next day so I thought this was a good one. Plus she had never hiked in the Superstitions before. Got to the mining restaurant a little late. We started our hike around noon. Made our way up to siphon draw which is dry as a bone except for a tiny little pool which has more bugs in it than water. After a short break we headed up to the top. Not much wildlife to see except the occasional small lizard. Once at the top we took in the beautiful views and enjoyed the cool breeze. Our decent was a little more challenging. Multiple slips happened but neither of us ever fell. From the top to siphon draw we took it very slow because of the loose gravel combined with the steep trail. Made it down in 2 hours. Great day, great hike and glad to open someone else's eyes to the beauty of the Superstitions. I think we will do a peralta/cave trail loop next time.

We arrived at the Horton parking lot around 11 and made our way across the bridge and up to the campground to start our journey. It was a slightly cool day with some strong winds. At times the sun was covered up by dark clouds. Glad I took a long sleeve shirt to stay warm.
We mostly followed the trail but at times we took detours down to the creek and followed it up a ways.
At the 2 mile mark we noticed an awesome camping spot on the other side of the creek which had nice rock chairs and an interesting log teepee thing. I noted the location and will definitely be remembering that spot for future camping. I'm sure it is a popular spot in the summer.
After another mile you come to intersection of a few different trails. We went right to continue onto the Horton Spring. Close to the end you pass through an open gate and over the water is a man made bridge out of 2 logs. Not sure why they are there since if you cross the log you go no where! We made our way up the hill and saw Horton Spring. It is mind boggling to see water gushing out of the rocks. The water just appears! I went even more up the hill and passed through a fence to find another nice camping spot. We rested here for about an hour and then made our way back to the car.
Only saw 1 person on the entire trail and she was taking selfies close to the trailhead. The rest of the trail was all ours. Didn't see any wildlife except for birds. I kept looking around for anything but came up empty. I was also mad at myself because I decided to leave my hammock in the car. Could have taken a nice nap at the end of the trail. Very beautiful trail with lots of shade. I would say it is a good trail for the fall season.

Day off from work means I'm going hiking! The road to the trailhead was a bit scary for the last .25 miles in my car. Had to put it in 1st gear going up the last hill. Once the hike started and we descended to the creek I was super excited. The weather was perfect. It wasn't crowded at all and the leaves were falling. At certain points of the hike I thought I was back on the east coat in Connecticut. Loved the trees. Of course reality would slap me in the face as I step past a little cacti. Lots of little caves on the way. Checked out most of them. We went 4.1 miles to the end. This was the only disappointing part for me. We kept pushing towards the end because I thought there was a big payoff but there wasn't. All we got was dry land. No running water and lots of small boulders to walk over. All in all though it was a great hike and trail. Met some nice people on the way back with 2 dogs. Let my guy go with them for a dip in the water. Got back to the car exactly at 5 and had a lot easier time on the road on my way out.

Got a late start to my hike once again! Don't think I've had an early start in a year! Anyways made it to Carney trail head around 10:30am. A few cars parked there but saw no humans the entire hike. The temperature and sun were a factor. My dog was not happy after only 30 minutes. We took a long rest behind a boulder. Nice breeze in the shade. Soon we were run off by some angry bees and the hike continued onward. Most of the way I just let the dog go in front and he was leading. Don't know how he does it but he knew the way. Once we got closer to the cave there is loose gravel so be mindful of that for the last 1/4 mile of the trail. Once we reached the cave I was impressed by the size. The amount of bees inside was a little scary though. Really cool that you can hear all the bees buzzing around. Lots of wasps flying around too but I was more worried about bothering the thousands of bees! After a brief rest we made our way down. When we got closer to the car I noticed lots of sheriff SUV's, fire department etc heading towards the Peralta trailhead. Wonder what was happening?

Easy hike to the bridge. Parking lot at the end of the paved road was pretty full. Everyone on the trail seemed to be in good spirits and was friendly. Only trouble I had was when walking to the Devil's Bridge TH on the 4x4 road we got dusted a few times by passing Jeeps. Once we reached the bridge we hung out for a bit and just people watched. Kind of a dangerous area for kids but we saw plenty just running around on there own. Got me a bit worried. I kept my dog very close to me on his leash. As far as the bridge it looks scary when you look at it but once on it you will notice it is very wide. Got some pictures and headed down to the other trail that goes under the bridge. Love the area and think I'll explore it more another day. Noticed what looked to be a trail going off on the other side of the bridge. Wonder where that one leads :)

What a pleasant hike on a beautiful day. Got to the trail head around 11 and off we went. Not many people out today. Passed only a handful of groups. Once I got to the crossing I 1st went right and explored down stream a little. Once I got to the point where I had to get my feet wet I decided to hang a u-turn and go check out the crack. It was full of shirtless guys writing papers. Not my kind of scenery so we only spent a few minutes there. We then crossed the stream and made our way up the rim. On our way we spotted about a dozen monkey looking creatures. I only got 1 good photo of the, I later learned that there are no monkeys! So I'm sure one or all of you will tell me what I saw lol. Found a good spot to put up my hammock and take an hour nap. Felt so relaxed. Once I saw the sun started to set we made a mad dash back to the car. I brought everything but the kitchen sink and a flash light! Never forgetting that again. All in all was a wonderful trail with lots of great views plus flowing water always makes it even better!

Started out later then I wanted. Around 1pm but we had a cool breeze. Made it down to the water pretty quickly. The trail is easy to follow. The hardest part I had was finding a spot to cross the creek without getting my feet wet. My dog kept going back and forth mocking me when I finally spotted the spot to cross. I was planning on going swimming but after looking in the water and seeing the enormous amounts of crayfish I thought otherwise. Lots of great places to camp here. I'll defiantly go back and explore more.

Went on a night hike to see some critters and was not disappointed. 2 rattlers, a gila monster, a few dozen tarantulas and countless other things. One day I will actually spot an owl. Heard them all over the place. Water was flowing good and made sure I brought a gallon of bug spray for the mosquitoes.

Got to the mining camp restaurant around 8pm and started our night time hike. Was gorgeous weather with a nice breeze and the occasional sprinkle of rain. The main purpose of this night hike was to find little critters. There were plenty out after it rained. Found multiple toads, tarantulas and mice. Was hoping to spot a rattlesnake but we had no luck. Tried to get pictures of them all but our camera phones were not helping. We did however keep running into this same smaller snake. Was unsure what kind of snake it was so we spent about 5 minutes with this thing trying to get a picture. So I'm posting the pictures of the snake and hopefully someone can shed some light on what it is.
Once you got up to Siphon Draw we were determined to keep going all the way to Flat Iron. Unfortunately we took forever to get up to the Draw and my flashlights were beginning to die. Used my phone as a flashlight for the way down. Got back to the Mining Camp around 11:30. Fun night. Also was my 1st real night hike.

Wanted to take my dog Bueller swimming and I picked a perfect spot. The 16 miles on fossil creek road were tough in my Nissan Versa but we made it to the parking area! :y: Easy trail to hike. Just a stroll through the forest with the sound of water the entire time. We stopped numerous times to check out all the different swimming options. Continued on to the actual waterfall. There was about 30 people there having a good time. Everyone had their dogs with them so my guy was a little distracted. After I went swimming we back tracked and found a more quiet watering hole with a smaller waterfall. The one we stopped at is just before the 1st wooden bridge. Water was gorgeous and the right temperature for me. Saw some clouds rolling in and we took off for the car. I'm pretty sure that 16 miles of unpaved road is horrid when it rains.

1st time going to the top. Was a very fun adventure. Only problem I had was once I reached the top there was 40 mph winds and it was 30 degrees. So only spent about 5 minutes at the top. I plan on doing this one again in March when it will be a little warmer. Want to explore the top a little more and climb to the true top elevation point of the area.

Was in the area for the Warrior Dash races and saw this mountain only a few blocks away. Parked right next to the railroad underpass and made my way towards the butte. Went through the gate and was immediately greeted by cows running by me very fast and then I saw some guys on horses who were herding them. As a guy who grew up in the suburbs of Connecticut this was very exciting for me. Got to the bottom of the mountain and began my climb up. Easy trail to follow. Some loose gravel at certain spots but it was an easy hike to the top. Once I reached the top I was not able to get close to the pyramid tomb. A giant hive of bees was currently setup there and seemed very angry. As I tried to get just a little closer to read what was on the tomb I was met with a buzzing around my head. A few bees were pissed at me. I ran like hell one of those suckers got stuck inside my shirt. It stung me in the back. As I was walking down the mountain now I met an old man with a cane who had just sprayed the tomb about an hour ago. That would explain the angry mass of bees at the top. Went back to my car and got the stinger out of my back. Very short hike but a memorable one.
