I regret venturing out to Secret Meadow for the first time during elk-hunting season. I didn't find the solitude I was hoping for, at all. There weren't any other people at the meadow itself, but I must have encountered at least two dozen vehicles on the roads out to it. Secret Meadow does not seem to be a secret to elk hunters. The only wildlife I saw was strapped to the back of a quad. I would strongly discourage anyone from hanging out in this area at dusk or dawn, during season, and I would think twice about bringing a dog. I'd like to try this spot again in the spring, I think.

This is an awesome little hike with some truly incredible views at the top — a real gem. The only precautionary notes are: 1. There is not much shade on this trail. I would avoid it on a really hot day. 2. As near as I can tell, FR191 is closed in the winter and reopens in the spring, after most of the snow melts. It is a MESS when it is wet. Best months to hike this trail are probably May, June and October.

This is a gorgeous little hike, one of my favorite dailies in the area. It does get quite a lot of mountain bike traffic on it, and joggers. Go on a weekday, if you can.

FR45 is closed to motorized traffic. This looks like a long-term closure to me. (Part of the area's new management/restoration plan?) The hike is still doable, you just have to walk an additional 2 miles or so from the FR108/45 junction to the trailhead. So, the distance of the hike nearly doubles (to 9-ish miles) and the extra 4+ miles aren't terribly interesting.

Went up Bear Jaw and down Abineau and loved, loved, loved this hike. I had read triplogs saying the Abineau stretch was prettier (if one were forced to choose) but I disagree. My 6-month-old pup did fine on this trail, and we only encountered two other hikers. We got a late start and didn't finish until about 3 p.m., just as it was starting to rain.
