First time here after 5 years in the Valley and I really enjoyed the cool temps, nice workout, and the wildflowers! Definitely worth checking out.

People blaring music on their electonic devices while heading up these in-city trails should be outlawed :)

The 4 Peaks Wilderness is one of my favorite areas in Arizona. We camped at Roosevelt Lake the night before at a very nice and secluded tent-only spot at Choilla. Got to the trailhead around 1030am the next day and had a very nice time checking out all the Spring wildflowers while hiking up to the saddle.

This trip was a lot more easy going than the last time I headed up to Brown four years ago. In 2011 (i think in March?) the "chute" was full of snow. It was easy enough to hike up, but after you summited and started to make your descent it looked like an ice chute. It kind of freaked my senses out then, and I've since considered it one of the scariest hikes I've ever been on... even though the trip down wasn't nearly as bad as I perceived it to be. This time it was even easier. What a great trip and fantastic views! Internal debate on whether to try the Motherlode next year..

This really is a great trip! It has a ton of variety and fantastic scenery. Logistics can be a bit of a challenge as it requires a car shuttle to the trailhead from Wahweap Marina then a 40 mile boat shuttle from Rainbow Bridge back to Wahweap when you finish (oh yeah, and permits). With that being said, we did see a group that was doing a 4-day out and back, so that's a possibility. Elevation posted above is just a guess. It's much closer to that than the 8000 I've seen on a couple other triplogs. It is a tough ~3800 though!...a lot of up and down throughout most of the trail.

Late March/early April is the best time of year for this trip. The snow on Navajo Mountain starts to melt which provides plenty of water in the creeks. It's a very secluded area so make sure you cover all your bases and are an experenced desert backpacker.

Interesting day of "flexible hiking". I came out here originally to do Hog Canyon. I thought it could be accessed from the Hieroglyphic trail for a while until I found myself at Hierogylphic Spring which is (obviously!) in the wrong canyon. Debated on going up to ridgeline via Hiero until I realized a few things...1) it was hot and it could wait another day, 2) my allergies were killing me, and 3) i wouldn't mind drinking some beers by my pool. After doing some scouting, we headed back down and headed to Pass Mountain before realizing the same thing (before heading out from the area, we found the proper way to head up to our original destination). At the end of the day, I had a good scouting hike, lots of floura in the Useries, and a few IPA's by the pool. I'll call that a good one!

This hike really kicked my butt today. I didn't bring my A-game plus it was pretty damn hot out there. In fact, it'll take me at least a few hours to recover! With that being said, what a great hike! A lot of wildflowers were present and I did find one cactus bloom. Thankfully no issues in finding the route turnoff, which I unfortunately can't say about my scrambling skills today. Highly recommended.

My brother who doesn't hike much came to visit me this weekend from Montana. I thought the nearby Freedom trail was a good choice to show him a bit of the area as it's a quick drive from where I live and isn't very strenuous or long. I've done the summit trail probably at least 100 times but have only done this one once, so i suppose it was about time for me to do it once again as well.

I probably don't have much to say about this trail that hasn't been said already. It's not my favorite trail by a long shot, but it's very convenient (In fact, I take the 51N everyday to work and am so thankful that I get to pass this Preserve on a daily basis rather than having to take the 17 or 10!) We saw one trail-runner and I thought to myself that this would be a perfect area to get your weekday workouts in if you are into that sport. It does cross two saddles so there is some up and down which is more than welcome if you want to get the heartbeat up just a bit.

Headed up to Tucson this weekend for some outdoor fun and the gem show. After doing some research via HikeAZ I found this trail description which sounded amazing. We gave it a whirl and it didn't disappoint! Some great views (aided by some good hiking weather) made it a real fun trip. It's been a while since I've been in this area so it was fun figuring out what the various canyons were. In fact, it was hard for me not to start planning my next excursion in the Catalina's while I was out on this one. A wide varitety of butterflies and birds added to the enjoyment of the trail as well.

Probably my favoite South Mountain hiking trail. It was a hot one today, so got a decent sweat going. A fair amount of people were out on the trail today (Sunday), but I'm sure it was significantly less than the traffic on Camelback and Piestewa.

I've been trying out a few routes lately in the Supes lately so thought it was time for Bark's Canyon.
I thought the route finding in this canyon would be a bit tougher after reading different reports on this one. I may have read older writeups as there were plenty of cairns to keep us on track for the entirety of the hike. I almost wished there was a bit more problem solving needed, but I suppose it's a heck of a lot better than getting lost! Either way, it was a very beautiful and scenic hike (and an awesome day outside!). Opted to take the Peralta trail down. It doesn't get any better than the Superstitions!

Also had a fun wildlife seeing today. After ten minutes of walking on the Bluff Springs Trail we sighted 7 small javalina travelling together on the hillside.

Did Rim Cubed Friday evening/Saturday. I was somewhat intimidated as I have never done that type of mileage in one day, along with the fact that most my summer has been spent doing flat creekside hikes and drinking 6 packs with the a/c on indoors. Either way, I'm always down for a bit of a challenge, so I decided to go through with it.

Started down Bright Angel a little before 8pm. Was pretty excited as this would be my first hike on any of these trails. I was planning on using the South Kaibab but I didn't have my own transportation and the buses don't head out there that late. Passed 2 people from Minnesota around the 2 mile mark. They were also doing the cubed hike. Got to phantom ranch around 11pm and started north through the box. I was definitely excited to see this area of the hike on my way back when the sun was out. Was around 2am when I reached Cottonwood. I took a nice half-hour break here before proceeding forward. Had to slow down on the switchbacks up. The moonlight was gone at around 430 and it was extremely dark. Started hitting rocks with my feet which eventually took quite the toll on my two big toes. Topped out at 535am. Took 15 (cold as hell up there!), and headed back.

Started jogging down toward Cottonwood, making pretty good time. After taking a break at Cottonwood though, things turned tough. So far the hike had been pleasant, but now blisters were starting to form and my two big toes hated me for the rock impacts. The box area that I had been looking forward to see wasn't that great through my eyes unfortunately. I was feeling the pain and was ready for the ascent. Lots of traffic here! I tried to free my mind from the fact that I had 11 miles to go still.

Got to Phantom Ranch around 11am. I opted to take the South Kaibab up. I got a second wind on the first half, but ran out of gas on the last 3.5 miles, taking numerous breaks. I was very happy that I took the time to dip my shirt in Bright Angel Creek before ascending as it was HOT on the way up. It's been said before, but take the South Kaibab ascent seriously and bring a lot of H20! I rationed my water just enough to make it to the top with a bit to spare. It was a long bus ride back to the campground as I kept on passing out on the bus missing my stop! All in all, it was a good experience. I'll learn from this and take every precaution for my feet on my next long trip!
