In retrospect, I should have rated this hike a 3 simply because the views from the top of the mesa are absolutely spectacular. I hiked Doe Mtn. on Memorial Day, 2003. I somehow wandered off the trail at one of the switchback points about halfway up, onto a deer trail, or something. The little trail got rather steep, eventually intersecting the real trail again. It was a nice hike to the top where i had no problem navigating around the perimeter of the mesa. Several cairns are strategically placed, making it easier to find the trail again when ready to hike down. You probably don't want to wear shorts on this hike if you plan to explore the mesa.

I hiked to the end of the main trail today (5/26/03), looking for the arch. Found the arch on the return trip, thanks to the mini cairns and arrow fashioned of rocks that mark the side trail. The main trail seems to end at the massive rock slide, but if you climb the boulders, angling off to your right, you'll pick up the trail again. It gets pretty steep from there, until you reach the end of the trail, at the base of a canyon wall, some 40-50 feet from the top of Box Canyon. Beautiful views from there and from the arch, as well. You'll find intermittent shade along the main trail, but no shade along the side trail up to the arch, until you get there. Well worth the effort, tho! Enjoyable hike...great exercise!

I now see why this hike is considered to be The Favorite in Arizona. Wonderful surprises greet you at every single turn. We hiked to, and beyond the 3 mile point, which I am told is the end of the formal trail (tho it goes on for another 11 miles). We went another .3 miles, to where you have to wade the creek, sometimes up to your knees, to continue onward. Here, the smoothly eroded rock walls rise high on either side of the creek, which is teaming with thousands and thousands of young trout. The water is pleasently cool; both fun and refreshing to wade around in. We reluctantly turned back here. Plan to spend lots of time at West Fork as there are many little side trails, as well as the impressive Lodge ruins, to explore.

I agree, the Sinaguan ruins, the sense of history you feel there, and the 360-degree views atop this white butte are awesome! As are the huge ants! But it was well worth the late afternoon drive from Sedona to hike the short trail and to read the entries in the guest book. History buffs might want to check out a book entitled "Vanished Arizona: Recollections of the Army Life by a New England Woman" by Martha Summerhayes. (Etext is available on the net.) Thanks, Lon, for turning me on to the place AND to the book!

My sister and I really enjoy checking out old ruins, so we drove out to the Atkeson Pueblo. It was late in the day, with only 1.5 hours of sunlight left. We were hoping to get a good look at the fairly well preserved ruin but were disappointed because it is fenced off. So, we decided to trek on over to the confluence. The path was easy to follow until we hit the ravine where it disappeared. We decided to hoof it, cross country, skirting the edge of the ravine around to the bluff where we found a great place overlooking the merging rivers. There, we sat and experienced the natural beauty and serenity of the place until it was time to leave. We hiked back to the ruin on the dirt road, enjoying the variety of plantlife in full bloom.
