This was my second Grand Canyon Bright Angel trip this month and this day was much cooler than my previous hike. I decided to take it a little further this time going all the way to the river instead of turning around at Indian Gardens. That extra few miles felt more like an extra ten when I started the return climb but was worth it! I left the previous night expecting to car camp somewhere near the park entrance, but all of the free camping and forest service roads were blocked due to the Kaibab forest closure. I ended up making it into Tusayan a little past midnight but had to turn around searching for a rest area to get some much needed sleep. The next morning was perfect, slight overcast and nice cool 73 degrees. The bright angel trail was fairly empty vs the previous time I had done this trail. The trip down was very smooth and quick since I wasn’t behind the morning mule train. This was my first time to the river and it was awesome it really was a motivator to plan a rim to rim hike soon. I pretty much had the entire area to myself besides a few other hikers. Overall an awesome trip and great warm up for a Rim to Rim hike. If you are planning to do this hike I highly recommend it and going all the way to the river.

This arch in Sedona is awesome and makes for some great pictures. It was hot, dry, and sunny. The main road from the parking lot is well traveled by the jeep tour companies, but plenty of space to let them cruise on by. This is a really nice hike, and I wish I had hiked it sooner. No running water at the parking lot/trail head, pit toilets were back open. The last part of the trail is pretty steep not sure how a dog would do near the end. A great hike with easy access.

Hike was nice and flat until the end, well traveled by day hikers, backpackers, 1 brave MTB rider. The creek water was flowing nicely! Really nice area my first time.

This was my first official hike of the summer. I have been wanting to do this out and back trip for a while. Im glad I did and didn't wait to get an overnight camp site pass. This is the precursor hike for me to the Kaibab to Phantom Ranch to Bright Angel day hike I want to do this year. The views in the canyon are awesome and a totally different experience from the two dozens times I had seen the canyon from the top. I decided to leave the night before to avoid the drive in the morning, I ran into some elk on the way into Tusayan. I ended up camping right outside of town on FR302, lots of camping spots and other campers. I wanted to get a semi early start, unluckily I got stuck behind the mule train, but it was fine in the end they went faster than I was going. The hike was awesome, and the creek was flowing at the bottom. The day use picnic are was pretty much empty, I wish I would have stayed longer. The hike felt long and hot, luckily some clouds rolled in and gave me a light drizzle 2/3 from the top. I really enjoyed this trail, it was challenging, and the full sun exposure would have been miserable without a sun umbrella. I plan to do it again in the near future, and cant wait. This hike is not recommended by the forest service according to the signs posted.

I was bored and decided to go for a mid day hike. Its only going to get hotter so I might as well enjoy the cooler temps. I had never seen the white tanks so dry. There wasn't any water anywhere and everything looked barren. The plan was to run/jog this trail but the heat sucked the energy out of me after the first 2 miles. I can jog 7-9 miles on the road without any water but hiking in the desert. I can easily drink 3 liters of water in the same distance.

They let me free from work half day and I already had my pack and clothes in my cruiser. What else is their to do on a Friday mid-day but hike.

I was surprised to see a car at area 7 usually the park is empty mid day during the summer. I considered doing the loop but I already had plans that evening and didn't want to push it.

Everything was normal for a mid day hike at the white tanks it was hot and sunny perfect weather for a nice tan and mild dehydration.

It actually cooled off a few degrees once I reached goat camp trail. Not much but a noticeable difference.

After coming off the bajada trail and reaching the road I decided to take the short cut and follow the asphalt back to my car. I could hear an ambulance the entire time. The hikers car I saw earlier had been taken to the hospital. I only know this because a Maricopa ranger vehicle had pulled up to me asking if I was ok. The guy said " we already took one hiker to the hospital" I assured him I was fine for the 3 mile jog back to my car.

For a hike that is usually 1/2 the distance I do it had really drained me that day for some reason. It might have been because I was wearing the lime green bandana instead of the fluorescent.

This was probably the most eye-opening hike I have attempted. The plan was to visit the pools but I didn’t make it. It does hurt my fragile male ego to admit defeat but lessons well learned.

The hike starts off fairly moderate lots of climbing over rocks and general trail hiking. That was until I reached this wall that looked like a straight drop off at first. Pictures do not do it justice. Since I am a noob it looked enormous. After looking over the edge for a moment you can see the area you can climb down fairly easily.

There is a small little pool shortly after that is filled with lots of fish. It’s a shuffle to get around it and I found the easy way when I was heading back.

After that I enter this forest of green that appears to be poison ivy. It’s perfect because I’m wearing running shorts and a T-shirt. For some reason I choose to follow the left side of the canyon. After a while it becomes a thick wall of brush with a few scattered monster boulders in the path. I zigzag back and forth trying to follow the stream and find a path. I wasn’t sure what was burning my legs the whole time but it kept me motivated.

Finally I find a small path on the right and all I can think of is the scene from the Goonies “Stay to the right!” For some reason I kept wandering to the left (east) wanting to be near the water. After a few slips and falls I shimmy down a tree. I can hear more and more water so I felt like I was getting closer. Eventually I get to this big open area with a very narrow waterfall and pool. I decide to check my GPS (iPhone) and the phone will not turn on it’s displaying a huge caution sign that says something about over heating. I then go to take a drink of water from my bladder and its empty. I walk around this area for a little bit looking for a way to get down. I look at the miles traveled on my watch and realize I am only probably half way there. I get that gut feeling to go back. In the past I have ignored that feeling and its gotten me into a few jams.

I decided to head back to my car, but in the end I am extremely happy to have started the journey and I can’t wait to go back in the near future more motivated

This was my first time in this area. I decided to go straight there after work for a quick morning hike to see the general area. The white tanks are only about 15mins from my house and Estrella is about an hour drive. The trails are very flat and smooth great for trail running. There isn't much shade anywhere to take a break.

Perfect weather for after work hike. Slight overcast with lots of shade if you start at area 7 Ramada. This is the 3rd day I hike at the white tanks without seeing a single car or person on the trail. Lots of Chuckwalla lizards over a foot long!

The sun was setting soon and there was a sign posted at the trail head that the trail closes at 6pm. Plenty of time to spare for a short trail run after. The uphill is my favorite part, downhill not so much.

Decided to take as many trails at one one time without tracing my foot steps. It was hot!
