Nice hike with a couple of young boys who found plenty of cliffs to climb. Didn't get very far along the trail for that reason. Too much fun to climb. Nice water in the creek.

Several families from our Cub Scout Pack hiked the lava cave. I will say this: when the Forest Service says to wear a hard hat or a helmet, pay attention. I'm tall and I scraped or bumped my head (with bike helmet intact) 22 times -- okay, so I might be a bit of a klutz. But when you're constantly looking down at the lighted path in front of you, which is absolutely necessary, you don't pay attention to what's around your head and -- whack! -- there you have it. Plus the fact that the bike helmet makes you a couple of inches taller and you don't realize it so -- whack! -- there you have it, again.

This hike is going to be a challenge for those who aren't physically fit. I'm in good shape and I was definitely sore for a couple of days, as much from the tension of walking so carefully as from climbing over rocks.

And as for the FS suggestion of three sources of light with fresh batteries, once again, pay attention. I can easily see how one might drop a flashlight (saw two people do that) and either break it (one of them did) or lose it in a crevice. Saw two people whose batteries died. Yep, three sources of light is a very good idea.

By the way, one of our party helped shine light for the guy whose flashlight broke. Then he turned to continue on the hike and whacked his head on the cave ceiling, leaving a 1-inch gash that gushed blood quite spectacularly. A bike helmet would have prevented that. Just sayin'.

Took our Cub Scout Pack on this hike. Nice hike for younger kids, even the 5-year-olds. And no complaints from the adults, either. Most of the group also climbed to the top of the cliffs for the thrill of looking over. I highly recommend this hike.
