This was short hike with a group of friends on a sunny Saturday in Sedona. We began the trail from the Teacup Trailhead about 10 AM and made our way counterclockwise along the Sugarloaf Loop. We climbed to the top of the mountain where we enjoyed some wonderful views. Then headed back down to the main trail.
The only wildlife we encountered was a good-sized Horned Lizard. It seems he posed for several people on the trail today!
The trail is relatively well marked with cairns. However, we found ourselves at a road/driveway unexpectedly and had to backtrack to find the trail. There were two other groups who made the same error we did.
The Sedona landscape is wonderful, which makes this a nice trail. The trail itself is clear of rocks and well worn. However, there are a lot of other well-worn paths intersecting the trail, which can get you off course if you're unfamiliar or not careful about where you're going.

October 19, 2013 was a beautiful autumn day for a hike. The trees at the boatramp were bright yellow, making a magnificent scene from the trailhead. There were 20 in our group, in four vehicles. Parking was plentious and we had little trouble finding a spot about 10 AM. The west trail is paved and very easy to walk. We saw several people on the trail, but it was not crowded. The area around the boatramp was largely vacant, with a few fishermen wetting their lines. We took our time, taking pictures of the scenery and enjoying the beautiful mountain air. The east trail is not paved but it is easily hiked. However, after walking along the dam on the north side of the lake, the grasses in the spillway disguised the trail. We could see the parking lot, so getting back was not a problem.
We enjoyed seeing the mallard ducks but we did not see the bald eagles today.
All in all, a wonderful hike.

My wife & I took this hike because a fellow geocacher posted a hiking event. We met with the hike organizer at 2:15 AM and rode with him in his 4WD. The road to the trailhead was sandy and washed out, but passable with a high clearance vehicle. The trailhead was relatively easy to find, but that may be due to the person driving - he had been to this trail before.
There is an outhouse and a small parking lot at the trailhead. However, the outhouse was locked due to the Gov't shutdown. A very strong wind from the east accompanied us as we began hiking the trail in pitch black darkness, thankful that we had LED lights to show the way. I had downloaded the official trail route into my GPSr which proved to be helpful a couple times along the way. Things look so different at night!
We never made it to the summit because the wind at the last saddle was blowing at least 60 MPH constant. Fearing injury and fighting fatigue, we reluctantly turned and headed back down the trail.
Author Joe Bartels said this is Squaw Peak times two. I have to agree with this assessment. The climbing and the descent are both hard on the knees. Even so, I wouldn't mind going at this trail again. Next time, I'll begin at a more reasonable hour and make sure I'm a little better conditioned.
