Started my hike at 9:35 heading East on H5. The rain last night made for that beautiful aroma of creosote that I love having grown up in Phoenix. Nothing smells more fresh and clean than the desert after it rains. Connected to H3 and started off going South and took H1 up 59th Ave. Climbed the Northeast side of the mountain to the summit where I stopped for 4 minutes before heading down H3 on the West side. Connected back with H5 and took it back to my car.

A friend was supposed to go with me today but he cancelled so I decided to go for time. Only stopped once (at the summit) for 4 minutes. Made the loop in 1 hour 50 minutes. Hiking South Mountain every week is paying off!

Today was my first time hiking this trail up and back. The weather couldn't have been better, sunny and 63 degrees. The description of the trail almost kept me from hiking it but I decided not to pay attention to it and I am glad I did. My sister and brother in law accompanied me. It was nice and easy up to the summit road crossing them a steady climb up the rest of the way. We saw one other hiker on the way up. Once we hit the National Trail we took it up the the ridge line to see views to the South of the park. On the way down we ran into several groups of hikers and were very pleased we chose to hike earlier in the way. It was a great hike since we needed something short. In the future I would like to use this trail as part of a loop with National Trail and Kiwanis Trail.

What a beautiful day for a hike. Took my recently laid off brother in law with me to help him keep sane. This is one of my favorite trails and I fall in love with it again every time I hike it. There were a few others hikers out since it is a holiday week but everyone seemed to take the Dobbins extension rather than completing the trail. I am in much better shape than when I hiked this trail for the first time in March. We only stopped to rest 3 times on the way up and didn't stop on the way down. I also got to use a new pair of trekking poles and loved them.

Went for a late morning hike with my mom on a Monday. We decided to go up the Holbert trail and then decide to either go back down or make a loop from the top. Hit the trail head at about 11:45am and saw 3 hikers heading down within the first 20 minutes. There was a nice breeze blowing which really helped keep us cool. Once we reached the end of the Holbert trail we were feeling pretty good. Our adventurous side got the better of us and we decided to make a loop by going West on the National trail, down the Kiwanis trail and back to the car on Los Lomitas and Box Canyon loops. It was a beautiful day for mid May and we saw plenty of lizards, ground squirrels and even a couple of rabbits. There always seemed to be a small cloud of gnats following us but I only noticed them whenever we would stop. We ran into one other hiker where the National and Telegraph Pass trails meet by the Summit road and that was the last person we saw. About 3/4 of the way down the Kiwanis trail my legs felt like jello so I really had to push the rest of the way. We made it back to the car at about 4:30 and I was very happy to have the A/C blowing cold air in my face.

I absolutely loved this hike and hope to do it again when in better shape.

Couldn't think of anything better to do on the first day of Spring! Started off at the parking area at 67th Ave and Patrick Ln. Took the H5 trail to the East where it connects with the H3 trail. I decided to start off on the West end of the H5 trail taking it North and looping around to the summit. I attend Christ's Church of the Valley (CCV) which is clearly visible from here but have never hiked this trail before. There are some very large and beautiful houses down below the trail on the West side of the mountain. I made a good push up to the summit only stopping to catch my breath a couple of times. Came down on the East side of the mountain going along 59th Ave on the H1 trail. The weather was gorgeous, even better than yesterday, so there were quite a few other hikers on the trail. Even had a chance to see some beautiful dogs along the way. My legs did start to get very tired for the last mile but that is probably because I have only been hiking for a few weeks and I did a 4 mile loop at Shaw Butte yesterday.

Started off at the parking area on Central just South of Thunderbird Rd at about 8:15am. The weather was clear and there was a slight breeze throughout the hike. This is a wide trail that starts climbing immediately. I'm a big dude so I always rest after a decent climb. It took me about 50 minutes to get to the summit from the parking area. I went down the South side of the mountain and stopped at Cloud 9 for a few minutes and checked that off my Phoenix native bucket list. I continued down the South slope and turned East to loop back to the parking area. The climb and descent were a little steep but manageable. The loop back was mostly flat but very enjoyable. It felt like I was in the middle of nowhere yet I was in the middle of a large city. There were plenty of other hikers on the trail but it was nowhere near crowded.

I got to the trailhead at about 9:15am. There was a large group of people in the parking area with music blasting so it was obvious some kind of event was taking place. I ignored the crowd and started off on my journey. The first section of the trail was mostly flat and quite easy. It really started climbing once I reached the access road to the water tank and continued a moderated steep ascent from there. Once I got about 1.5 miles into the hike the group from the parking area started catching up with me. Apparently Texas Roadhouse was sponsoring a charity hike that morning and since it was the first day of Spring break a vast majority of the participants were ASU students. I didn't let the crowd deter me and kept on my way stopping after strenuous sections to catch my breath and take in the view. It was a very good climb up to the Buena Vista Rd and was mostly flat from Buena Vista to the TV Tower Rd. Once I reached the end of the Holbert trail I got on the National trail and went about a quarter mile where I could stop and take in the views away from the crowd. This portion of South Mountain is absolutely beautiful and I very much enjoyed sitting there by myself and admiring it. On the way back down the charity hike diverted everyone off the trail and through a canyon where the Dobbins lookout extension breaks away. This was very difficult for me as I am not in the best shape. There were sections with 5-6' drops where you really had to think about where to aim your feet and where to hold on. It took me quite a bit of time to get through here and even needed some help to get down one drop. After that it was smooth sailing down to the parking area with a few stops to let my knees and hips rest up.

This was my first time up this trail and I really enjoyed it. Next time I hope to make a loop taking Holbert up to the National trail, the National to the Kiwanis trail and Kiwanis to the Box Canyon Loop back to my car.
