Was a great day for a winter hike as the weather was to be clear and temps slightly above normal. Started the hike at 8:30am (which I STRONGLY recommend getting to the lot early. This is a popular hike and the lot fills early) and even as late as this, our starting temp in the sun was a warming 37 degrees... so we got moving quickly to keep the blood moving. By around 10:30am the temp raised enough that it was pleasant and enjoyable. We were 2nd group on the trail that day, so we enjoyed the access to the fresh dew and frozen capped puddles that were along the way. There was a mild flow to the creek from, the recent storm and the continuing run-off... which led to easy stream crossings that still provided a wonderful interactive experience with the canyon. There are 13 stream crossings that are easy to manage (we saw some doing them with ease with a child still in the pack). By around noon we were far enough past the end of trail that we decided to set-up a lunch camp and enjoy the views. Temps raised enough to drop a layer of clothing! Overall a great day.

Note: this is a very popular trail... Our lunch had a few visitors and the hike out had us passing many others, including a scout troop. Be prepared to share the trail!

Initial decent into the canyon was beautiful. You could see the autumn foliage following the creek and you get treated to a great scenic vista. Once in the canyon, the hiking is easy going till the first water crossing. Thanks to everyone who stacks rocks... in this hike they really helped a ton. The wide crossings at times makes it easy to lose the trail. I would recommend taking time to study the aerial shots of the hike to get the gist of where to seek the trail. The trail looks to be used regularly, but as you get further in, there is less wear and the brush is encroaching the trails; pants and long sleeves will save you a ton of scratches should you decide to push on to Parsons Springs. I was never able to identify by eye both Summers and Parsons Springs, but there was light flow from the creek. We followed this till the end of the water flow and headed back. Should you go the whole length, be prepared for about 6 rugged creek crossings.

Light Flow closer to the Verde River, pooling as you go up the canyon. Couldn't identify Summers Spring or Parsons Spring by eye... but by GPS the locations looked to be bubbling at a light flow.

Afternoon hike. Started about 12:30 pm and headed out. Weather was great for hiking (fluffy clouds, slight breeze, 68 degrees). Hike up to Weir trail was easy and took little time. Maintaining on the Bell trail took us on some great scenic views up the canyon... fall foliage was in effect, so the vistas were great. All connecting trails looked to be well kept. Took about 1:50 to get to Bell Crossing... when you come to that sign, keep to the left to get to The Crack (about 100 yards past sign). Down to Bell Crossing is good for some running creek action.

Great hike with an awesome payoff at the end.

The creek had many fall colors along the length... great amber and yellow hues!

More light to medium flow. The Crack was stocked with clear water. Too cool to jump in, but it felt great on the feet.

This hike started late in the season, on an unseasonably warm day: temps at 10am were 75 degrees at the trail head. The creek is dry for the first quarter to half mile in, and the trail was well cared for and surrounded by green grasses from the recent rains. While approaching the wet creek, the foliage began to get more colorful. Mostly reds and some yellows. The hike is easy and gradual for the first 2.5 miles - foliage progressively getting more yellow and orange as altitude went higher. Discovered many improved areas where hikers made camp for the night. For the last mile of the hike to the Highline trail junction, the terrain gets rocky, more switch-backs, and steeper trails. On reaching the Highline Trail Junction, there is a short hike to the spring and a small area with a footbridge over the creek. We took a break here and broke out lunch supplies and enjoyed the creek. Trip down gave a new perspective on the creek and we found many locations on that were just gorgeous. Definitely do not just hike this trail, but set aside time venture down to the creek often and explore. It's really worth the time... especially with fall colors.
