Well this is the first time I could get away for a much needed trip. The weather forecast was great (lows in the 40's and highs in the 70's)and I couldn't wait to get on the trail.
I arrived late (11:00am) at the General Crook Cabin on the first day and started out on Fred Haught Trail. I met five other hikers on this trail. I ended up at Pinchot Cabin around 4:00pm. I camped at Pinchot Cabin the first night (temperature dropped to around 40). I was disappointed that a large fire ring had been built in what was a nice grassy area under some trees.
I was up early had a good breakfast (scrambled eggs with sausage and three types of bell peppers) and hit the U-Bar trail. I met two hikers on this trail (Wow! Lots of people on the trail this weekend). :o I did see two elk while trucking on down the trail.
Dane Spring was flowing, a little slow from my last two trips. I wasn't sure if there would be any flowing springs after that so I loaded up on water. :scared: I dry camped a short distance down Barbershop Trail. Wow, did it get cold! The temperature had dropped to 40 just after the sun set and fell below freezing before dawn. I had some ice in one of my water bottles when I got up, as well as frost on the rain fly of my tent. I'm glad I didn't cowboy camp that night!
Since it was Monday, I decided to take my time breaking camp :y: . After another great breakfast and hot chocolate I packed up and headed on down the trail. About 11:00am I had an early lunch and spread my tent, rain fly, and sleeping bag out to dry in the sun while I chowed down on some Sloppy Joe mix on Paleo crackers. After lunch I checked my eyelids for holes (I needed about 30 minutes just to make sure :D ). Repacked everything and with a spring in my step I was off again. A short time later I passed yet two more people on the trail (man, I've got to do this trail in the middle of the week next time). Barbershop Spring was flowing so I didn't need to carry all the water I got from Dane Spring ](*,) .
I switched over to Houston Brothers Trail and was glad to see the area is recovering from the fire. Once I got to FR 300 it was a short walk (about three miles or so) back to my van. The day was great and with just the right mix of sun and cool breeze.

I was trying out a few new things this trip, here is the run down.
New tent 3F 2 person tent - Worked great!!
Hiking poles instead of a hiking staff - I'm now a convert. The bonus was I no longer had carry two poles for my tent.
The CNOC water bladder - fail. I contacted the company and they are sending me a new one.
Liner socks inside of my wool socks - fail. Ended up with a blister for the first time, back to just wool socks.
All my food was homemade freeze dried food. The Paleo crackers were the bomb! My wife and I will look into selling these.

Things that I wish I had taken on the trip.
Nothing. I had everything I needed without any dead weight.

Things that I would do differently.
Maybe a little heavier sleeping clothes, I was still warm enough even when the temperature dropped below freezing. Guess I'm just whinnying.
Get an earlier start. If I wanted the trail to myself start my hike on Wednesday.

Over all trail conditions.
Good trails, few trees down across any of the trails, just have to keep a sharp eye out at times for the faded blazes.

Well, I just had to get out and on the trail. It looks like my timing was great as I managed to do the loop before parts of the trail was closed. :app:
The weather forecast for day one was 50% chance of rain (never tell me the odds). I was on the good side of the odds as it was just over cast with temperatures in the 60's. I started out at General Springs and went in a clockwise loop. Fred Haught Trail was great as usual, nice to see the trail when it is dry. However for the most part the General Springs was dry, there were a few pools that had water but there wasn't any flow. I spent the night at Pinchot cabin, once again my timing was great as I had the tent up and even had dinner before it started to rain. I battened down the hatches and called it an early night. It rained off and on most of the night.

Day two saw partly cloudy skies and great 60 degree temperatures. After filling up my water bottles, I had to pack up my wet tent because I didn't want to waste daylight waiting on it to dry. I'm really glad that I downloaded the Route Scout app for my phone. I didn't have to constantly check my route on the map and could just enjoy the hike. Merrit Draw had flowing water, but Moonshine Draw was dry. I was very glad to get to Dane Spring which had a good flow of ice cold water. I covered 9.9 miles before I called an early stop. I wanted to setup my tent and let some of my gear dry out before dark. I found a great place just off the trail and watched the sunset. I have to give a shout out to whoever did trail maintenance on U-Bar Trail! It was great not to have to scramble over all the fallen trees that were all over the trail.

Day three was a lazy day. I got up and spent an hour just enjoying the morning as I ate and packed to get going. For the most part Coyote Spring was dry, just a few pools of water here and there. I didn't find any real water until I got to the bottom of Dane Canyon. :SB: OK I do have a complaint about Route Scout. Every mile it would call out times and information (which I liked), but that was proceeded by some random bird call (I've since turned that feature off). There was many a time I would stop to look for the bird making the calls just to find Route Scout was the source. The weather once again smiled on me with scattered clouds and a wonderful breeze to keep things cool. I clicked off another 9+ miles to get back to the vehicle. Not 20 minutes after I arrived at my vehicle it started to rain, what timing! :y:

Great hike all in all! Wonderful fall colors!

This time of year with shorter days, I made the mistake of not making to the trailhead until 10am a mistake that lead to not completing the trail as planned.
When I read the description of this trail and many of the other triplogs I was hoping for a nice trail that lead to a remote area :app: . Yes, it was remote but the trail deteriorated the farther I went until I had to guess if I was on the trail or not :yuck: . At one point I was way too far up slope and had to bushwhack my way back down to the stream. There were cairn from time to time but some did not lead to anything that looked like a trail. Many areas were overgrown or impassable.
For the first 3 1/4 miles the trail is very passable, though I would strongly recommend long pants and long sleeves. The scrub oak and a few other thorn encrusted plants kept me on the lookout. The windmill has been blown down for a few years not and the metal trough is dry (but the creek is close by). It was nice to see the grave-site was intact and the fence even had a coat of paint. There is a nice campsite a short distance up the trail from there (it was taken by someone), but my goal was Gowan Camp.
Once I passed the Mazatal Wilderness sign I had about another 1/2 mile of decent trail (it was washed out in two places). Then the trail started to follow the creek (I guess) there are some cairn, but everything was so over grown that my pace slowed to what felt like a crawl.
Because of the late start and the condition of the trail when I came across a small flat area at 3:45pm I called a stop. I had only made it 4 1/2 miles in 5 hours and 45 minutes! And I still would have had 3 1/2 miles to go and part of that would have been in the dark.
OK, so I made the best of it with a good meal and some hot chocolate. I decided to just cowboy camp  as I had checked the weather report and it was forecasted to be clear skies for the next two days. The night sky was great, all the stars and a few wisps of clouds drifting by.
The morning greeted me with a light rain :sl: . I yelled at the clouds what the forecast was, it just kept raining, so I packed up and headed back. Finding the trail out was a little easier and I made it back to the trailhead in 4 1/2 hours.

Well, I wanted to just have a few days to spend on the trail taking my time (hence three day for a 30 mile loop). The Cabin Loop was my pick based on the feedback from this site.
I decided to walk the loop clockwise starting on the Fred Haught Trail (#22) to the U-Bar Trail (#28) to the Barbershop Trail (#91) cutting south on the Houston Brothers Trail (#18) finely back to the trailhead on the General Crook Trail or the FR300.
I didn't make campfires, heck I would have been hard pressed to make one with all the rain.

Day One

Temperatures: H ~ 52, L ~ 47

Late start, I didn't arrive at the Fred Haught Trail head until 2:20pm. I was the only one there although the logbook showed a few people had used the trail within the last few days. The Fred Haught Trail is very well marked with "Cabin Loop" signs attached to trees (these signs are reflective).
The day was very overcast and I was ready for rain. About one hour down the trail the rain started. On went the rain gear and the hike continued despite the rain/hail. The rain stopped about 4:30pm but the clouds still hung low.
There was a lot of water in the stream and pools.
I setup camp just before dark. It rained a few times during the night but was for the most part dry by morning.

Day Two

Temperatures: H ~ 53, L ~ 44
Lazy morning didn't hit the trail until 6:45am. I had a little trouble following the trail as it crossed and ran along Forest Roads (had an extra half hour walk when I turned left onto a road instead of right).
I crossed over to the U-Bar Trail at the Pinchot Cabin. The cabin is still standing but is all boarded up. The Pinchot Spring was flowing with plenty of water.
The U-Bar Trail is not well marked for the most part I had to rely on old blazes on trees. After crossing into Dane Canyon there were large trees that had fallen across the trail. I saw quite a few elk (several herds) as well as some deer.
Dane Spring was running, but only out of the larger pipe, about 1 liter a minute.
About 5pm the coyotes started up a singing group as they hunted or maybe the hunt was over and it was the dinner bell. Started raining hard while making camp, kept raining until 8pm. Another cold night as the sky would clear, then the clouds would roll in and the rain would start again.

Day Three

Temperatures: H ~ 52, L ~ ?
Up early and was on the trail before light. I transitioned to the Barbershop Trail, there were a few "Cabin Loop" signs along the trail. I had to keep a sharp eye out for blazes and markers. For most of the day the sky was overcast, but that didn't hamper the beautiful landscape.
I was hoping when I turned south on the Houston Brothers Trail it would be better marked, nope, but I was able to find my way without any issues.
I was very glad to change over to the FR300 to walk the last five miles to my vehicle. The sun came out and I got to use the sunglasses I had been lugging for the last two days. :y:

Things I was very glad I took:
Topo map
iPhone with GPS
Extra water reservoirs as many of the streams were still dry even after several days of rain.
Rain Kilt (made out of a plastic bag)
12 volt tire pump (I had a flat tire when I got back to my vehicle) :)

Things I wish I had taken:
Two more pairs of socks (as I couldn't get one of the two pairs I had to dry out after the first day)
Space blanket (I usually have one, but I forgot to pack it this time)
Rain jacket with pit zips

Thoughts on trip :app:
Was I glad I did it? Yes.
Would I do it again? Heck yes! :y:
I wish I had made campfires, but that might have been way to much effort for a fast three day trip. The "Cabin Loop" signs were for the most part placed in the areas people traveling the AZT would see them, I was very glad for the old tree blazes on the rest of the trails.
