This hike is called Quartz Mine Trail to Javelina Peak. There were only two others besides myself on this trail. One should have some type of mapping system so you don’t take a wrong turn at the various junctions. There are several junctions that are marked, however not until the last junction do any state Javelina Peak. The trail does not have the amount of loose rocks other trails have. Due to the cooler temperatures and the amount of rain, the trail was bordered with Green Plants and flowers: It’s a very scenic trail with great views, that get better the higher you are. Going up the last half mile to the summit gains around 600’, and is very steep.

Once on top you can see Goodyear, Glendale and several mountain ranges. The F16’s and F35’s from Luke fly over the area quite often and are not that far above you. I liked watching them fly over. There is a marker at the summit and a tin under a rock where you can sign your name and date. The first 200’ of decent requires care as a slip there would hurt. I will do this hike again because of the beauty and lack of crowds.

A remote trail once you enter the wash, with a warning sign if you travel counter clockwise. You will encounter some scrambling on polished rock with small holds, friction climbing. It’s i think the most remote trail in the park. I went for 3 hours without seeing another person. It’s a very scenic trail with some great views over desolate country. There is a old earthen dam at about 1-1/4 miles along the 2 mile wash. I stopped there for 45 minutes for lunch and to just take in the view. This trail is for experienced hikers only because of the remoteness and that your cell phone may cease to work in the area in the wash and past it, (Verizon). The trail starts off easy then after a few miles you come to a warning sign. Your speed will slow considerably once you pass that sign and enter the wash in 1/2 mile. Take at least one gallon of water and lots of high energy snacks, and extra clothing and emergency gear like a good whistle and a first aid kit. Don’t try this from the end of April to the end of September. In 2015, three fit men in their early twenties did in the summer. One of them died from exhaustion and heat stroke. Once you enter the wash and exit it your 5 miles ether way to exit over huge boulders or steep switchbacks with no shade and temperatures over 100 degrees. This hike should not be done with temperatures above the mid eighties for very fit to seventies for the average hiker. I cannot stress this enough with my background and being a EMT. If you start getting heat exhaustion and your beyond cell phone coverage your in real danger. Please heed this advice.

Very crowded trail and steep. Very pretty rock formations and valleys. Signs all over warning people to stay on the trail, and right past the first sign a hiker climbing up 50’ on a cliff for a photo. No wonder there are so many rescues and deaths. In addition hikers with no food or water and in tennis shoes, (not trail running shoes) and then the trail runners which i would not try, because one wrong step and you will be seriously injured or worse. It was worth doing once, however i won’t go back except to guide a close friend up. I climbed in Washington State and Alaska for 39 years on steep ice and snow and rock. Because of my background and being a member for several years in mountain rescue, i carry more then most and will survive if something happened.

I am just not used to the modern day hiker and trail runners that go ultra light. What i observed is incredible physical conditioning in many on this mountain.
