Quick out and back with the Mrs. along with a couple cans of wine from Merkins Vineyards. One of the few trails in Sedona that will give you privacy, great option for a hike with the dogs

Finished off the NY segment that we left off from last time, Peekskill NY to Pawling NY. Typical (in my experince) New York hiking, always close to road noise with flashes of rain and lost of clouds... RPH Shelter was a delight though, and the culture on the trail is one that everyone should experience. Fall colors we're close to peaking and water was plentiful as usual. Next up is Pawling NY to somewhere in CT?.....

We were fully aware of the massive crowds to be expected, so we weren't disappointed in that aspect. Just an easy hike, cruising in and out, following the stream after a bit to avoid passing people every 5 minutes on the trail. Turned around a ways after the trail ended when the wind picked up and the rain started to fall, but the rain only lasted a half an hour or so. Always a great area to visit, and nice to see the number of parents introducing the young ones to spending time outdoors. Trail is easy enough to go barefoot a la Cody Lundin after a mutual bet between me and a friend was made, and surely many "hobbit" comments were made as a result.

Spent three days along the Appalachian Trail in what turned out to be the polar opposite of hiking in AZ, nothing but moisture, fog, and rain for the entire trip without seeing the sun once. Got to the trailhead via train to the town of Harriman then walked the 2 miles of so to the trail. Switchbacks were non existent as we headed straight up and down hills, struggling to keep our footing in the muddy ground. The shelters along the trail were an interesting experience, provided a (mostly) dry place to hang up wet clothing set up our sleeping bags, although with it being the height of thru-hiking season space was at a premium. Finished up with a road walk from the Bear Mountain Bridge to the town of Peekskill where we caught a train back to NYC.

Managed to stay in the shade until the top of the Tom's Thumb Trail, saw a drunk guy on an ATV, few people, and some good mileage. Solid hike I'd say

After the constant rain last night that continued to this morning, I wanted to get out and do a longer stretch along some of the trails that I had not done yet, so I settled on a loop around McDowell mountain, starting from the 104th & Bell Rd parking lot, taking the levee trail to the Bell Pass trail up and over to the Windgate Pass trail, and following that all of the way back to the 104th & Bell TH. Rained until midway up to Bell Pass, then I watched the clouds race up the drainage and surround me, giving me vision only for about 30-40 feet. From there it was a easy rest of the hike, with the well graded trail up the backside (east) of Windgate pass, then a long slow downhill until I reached my car again. According to the trail signs it was a tad over 10 miles, which makes sense with the pace I was at. Really impressed by all of the trail building that they've done in the McDowells, there's tons of loops like the one I did ranging from a few miles to up to 20 if you've got the time and weather.

Cloudy the whole morning, with a couple of drops of rain on my way down from the pass. Gnats were out in full force, which got kind of annoying towards the top. Some idiot had an ATV about half way up the trail, and abandoned it after getting a flat tire (shocking, a flat tire after tramping through a few cacti). Wanted to pop the rest of their tires to teach them a lesson, but that would have just made it more of a pain to get it out of there (plus I didn't have a knife)

First time up the new trail (sidewalk) that they've made for Tom's Thumb. Being only a few weeks old, the trail is in amazing shape, and follows a ridge to the west of TT. Much steeper then I expected, you gain quite a bit of elevation up a very long series of switchbacks. With all of the new trailbuilding that has been going on, it's possible now to follow establish trails all of the way to the other end of the preserve to the Sunrise and other THs by Via Linda.

Quite a view from the top, saw two other jeeps and a durango on the road. Still a bit of snow on the road near the top that made the driving hairy for 30 feet or so

Took the jeep out for a quick spin on the trail, had some fun navigating the trail in the mud, made "The Steps" interesting when they were covered in muck
