Headed west due to road closures on the 101. Wanted to see the petroglyphs. My Honda CRV enjoyed the drive and performed admirably (I was a little worried but it was all good).

Highlight of the day was having lunch in the shade across from the petroglyphs. It was a great day for walking.

Saw four people who were leaving the petroglyph area right as we were arriving.

It was a long drive, longer than I expected. But it's not like it's far away, it's only out near 557th Avenue (see the images).

It would be nice to climb the area a bit more, but we would have to come back without our dog (who is very scary as he tries to "climb").

This is a good hike to let you know how good (or bad) of shape you are in. Watching someone run up it seemed pretty insane, but there were a few of them.

I took a couple of breaks on the way up as my initial ascent had a little too much gusto.

Tons of people (at 3:30PM).

Makes Pinnacle Peak seem like a small hill in terms of difficulty.

Went out this morning around 11AM. The weather was beautiful. The view is awesome from around the pass, and the walk in general was very enjoyable. It was a little monotonous near the end, but it was all good.

This was a good hike, and as others have mentioned there are great views of the surrounding areas (there are also too many houses, but it's still worth it). I may start doing this weekly as it's only about 15 minutes from my house.

The first 1/3 of a mile after the turn around is just plain hard, especially at a good clip.

In the pictures I uploaded I included a couple from the weekend before, one was on the drive up with the city lights (and a car going by which is a cool effect) and Pinnacle Peak itself before dawn.

I wish dogs were allowed, I would do this 3-4 times a week.

1/5/2004 - Time 1:04, no jogging, 18lb pack. I think I'm going to do this at least once a week for exercise. Far fewer people now that the holidays are over (I started at 3:00PM).

This is a great hike. It's got a lot of variety in terms of what's encountered (desert hike, cliff hiking, water) with quite a bit of the red rock.

The weather today was partly cloudy, and a nice temp somewhere in the 50's (I expected colder), we got started about 11:15 AM. My dog and I followed Bell Trail to the creek near Bells Crossing. We hung out there for a while so the dog could get his swim on (and also scare the s*** out of me when he almost ran off a 20 foot cliff into the creek).

After his swim (and my lunch) the dog had more energy than ever, and he forced a painful pace all the way back to the trailhead.

Saw a handful of people and a handful of dogs.

I'm really looking forward to doing this again once Spring hits that the flowers come up. This would also be a good one with swimming in mind during the warmer months (it would be work getting to the swimming when it's hot).

Did this hike on Saturday, wanting to get back into hiking. My wife and I are thinking of doing the 20-20, and this is the smallest of the 20 peaks.

When I went there was a small parking area defining the "trailhead", which isn't the right word but it's the point where the pavement turns to dirt. At that point was a road closed barrier and a sign saying the lookout was 5 miles away. Per other descritions I think this parking area may be new. It appears the dirt road is now closed to traffic (at least it was on this day).

Using Mapsource I see the trip as 7.6 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 2,027 (from 6,890 to 8,917).

Got on the trail at 8:30, it was nice and cool. We took our time on the way up taking photos of the volcano and the lava flow. The taller peaks were behind the cloulds.

On the way down from the summit we got a nice light rainshower. It wasn't enough to soak us, in fact, our labrador was dry by the time we got back to the parking area. Storms were coming and the sky was quite dark near the end.

The views were surprisingly good with awesome cloud formations. The temps were a nice break from the Phoenix heat as well. And getting lost would be difficult since you are hiking on a road.

We encountered a family that appeared to be on a tour by a park ranger (they were on 4 wheelers, the ranger followed in a truck and was talking about the mountain when we first passed them). Other than that, no one, and the entire peak area was ours alone.
