Started alone at Meridian trailhead 12:30 pm found the one available parking spot, perfect Temps today 60's picked up the pass trail heading clockwise towards Cat Hill and the park, level easy desert hiking up to the Wind Cave turn off, wow popular trail, many hikers, families, and dogs going up and coming down. Around a half mile in the trail starts some serious switchbacks as it climbs, the higher elevations were covered in yellow and orange with poppies, absolutely beautiful after all the rain we have been getting. Made it to the Cave mingled with the crowd for a bit and headed back down taking my time shooting pictures of the colored slopes. Backtracked to Meridian total time was about 5 hours. This was my first time to Wind Cave will definitely return soon, as I believe the flowers will get even better this spring. I will do it on a weekday the next time.

3 of us left Carney lot at 530 am with our headlamps made it to the cave at 640am, only ones there, Waited for the sunrise, by 720 am we heard others heading up as we started heading down, nice to have the cave to ourselfs for a beautiful sunrise, passed many on their way up as we headed down, at the fenclie My partners headed back to the lot, I planned to hike to kings ranch road, stayed on lost goldmine than started heading southwest across the valley, followed a two track and some mountain bike trails ending at a decline with a swinging gate with a sliding pipe lock, was not sure if I was trespassing, but talked to some bikers that assured me I was on the right track, hit kings ranch walked down to rt 60 where I had a pick up. Total of about 10 miles for this hike.

Started from lot 730 heading for peralta, took a side track on a two track that went toward the mountain climbed I rocks on right of wash to get a veiw, thats when I noticed the black line of clouds coming out of the west wind started picking up as I made my way up the rocks found a rock face with a bit of a overhang and tucked in just as the mountains erupted with thunder, hail started pouring out of the sky and bouncing off the ledges in a few short minutes it blew over and left a white coating especially in the highest elevations, decided to walk out still some light showers but by the time I neared the trail head it was sunny and 70 degrees again, glad I packed a good windbreaker and had my wide brim hat, it was a awesome hike.

Left from lostgoldmine trail parking lot , easy well worn trail got to a cedar post with a wave trail sign pointing straight ahead, turns out that this is the spot that if you turn north crossing the fenceline you will be on the trail that leads up to the peralta mine , I actually thought this was the wave cave, I met someone coming through the fence line that said the cave is this way, anyway it was a nice side trip to the rock face with a caged off mine shaft, you can climb the shelf ledge above the mine for great views, see the dust rising the length of peralta road as more hikers drive in, at this point I met someone who knew the area well and told me that wave cave was farther west down the goldmine trail, Pay attention to the next cedar post you pass, there is no sign on it but this is where you turn right through the fence line to get on the trail that climbs to wave cave, I passed this by a half a mile before I ran into someone that told me I had passed the trail, by this time 11:00 am the trail was getting crowded and the climb to the cave was all about passing and letting others pass on the narrow steep trail, well worth the effort when you get into the cool air of the cave. Plan on taking my wife but during the week when less crowded. Great hike with nice side trip.
