The trails were really well kept, and I had no trouble finding the trail on the Mesquite Canyon and Goat Camp. These were really easy to hike. I did miss the cairns for the "Jeep Trail" turn off the first time, which was a little bit more overgrown at parts, but it was very manageable with hiking shoes. On our way up to the peak, a tower service car passed us on the road, and I expected them to tell us to leave (because the map we received said something to the effect of "do not hike to the towers" and cut off at the end of the Goat Camp Trail), but they did not! There were a number of people hiking the Mesquite Canyon portion of the trail, but we only saw two other groups when we got to the Goat Camp trail, and we only saw a car of workers on the Jeep Trail. However, this was a Tuesday morning. I would expect that it can get busy on the weekend. Personally, I wouldn't be able to do this in the summer, but it's a lovely winter hike for me. I think that I would try to make a loop and skip the peak the next time that I go because the views are incredible throughout, and I wanted to try out some of the other trails. We saw a coyote, plenty of lizards, chipmunks, and a turkey vulture.

We saw many wild burros, and we didn’t make it! Started counter clockwise a bit late at 8:45, and at about 2 miles in we came across a large pack (at least 10 with some young ones) of wild burros on the trail. We tried to go around them in the wash, but there were another two in the wash. We didn’t want to go too far off the trail because we were a little worried about losing it based on the other comments. We waited for a while to see if they would move, but they seemed intent on grazing. We didn’t have cell service to research, and we aren’t familiar with horses, so we decided it would be best to turn around and try the loop in the opposite direction. Once we got back to the start, we went about a mile in. We saw another burro alone! This seemed much more manageable to get past. However, the burro seemed to be taking the trail towards us! We were within about 20 yards and the burro started honking and braying, which spooked us pretty bad! We had seen no one on the trail, but heard gunshots the whole time, which got louder as we approached this burro. For a second, we thought the burro was shot, but then we noticed it getting closer to us and continually making noises...we turned back. If you are less afraid of burros than us, than this would be a great hike! It’s really remote and quiet, but there’s quite a bit of burro droppings and tracks on the trail, so I think that they frequent the trail.
