(Late entry.) Did a solo trip to Horton Springs, just hung out by myself. Had the run of the place, a lot of areas to set up tent. Enjoyed watching the wild trout, wish I had brought a pole. Did some climbing up toward the rim perhaps a few miles, but short of the forest road. Only saw two other hikers in the area, they were heading west over to Tonto Creek.

According to the gauge, the coldest the temp hit was 25F, not bad with the proper gear.

Pleasant weather and good friends were perfect ingredients for a great day of hiking. Parking our vehicles at the service area, we had to hike back a ¼ mile or so to locate the trial head map. We had a little difficulty distinguishing between the Highland trail and See Canyon, so we followed the Christopher Creek to a point of about ½ mile, and then cutting across we find our trail. We should have started from the map sign and then headed to the right oblique across the creek, then we would have noticed the Trail 185 sign.

The trail is fairly maintained, only having to climb over a few fallen trees. Probably because we were too loud, having fun, we didn’t notice any wild life; however, on the trail ½ to the rim, we discovered bear scat no older than two days old on the trail and a few areas of Elk tracks and markings near the top. Also, as we neared the rim, we did notice the Aspen had begun their leaf color change.

The only people we noticed were at the bottom near the parking area, probably two groups of three people. Perfect day and great fun.

Great day hike: My wife and I enjoyed this short but scenic canyon walk. Having started at the trail head, just past the campground, we quickly realized what a treat this hike would become. After the .5 mile, we descended into into Sandys Canyon. The rain, from the previous day, still cling to the many plants and flowers, as we hiked to the bottom of the canyon. We noticed a variety of flowers, of all shapes and colors. Easily navigated and well marked, we made our turn around point at Fisher Point, which is really part of the Sandy Canyon hike, after a short rest.

We would recommend this hike to anyone who visit the Flagstaff area. We used the flagstaff Hikes by Mangum, 5th edition for our directions.

Beautiful hike, especially above the resort, which tends to spoil the nature aspect becuase of the noise factor. Wow, overall, my wife and I enjoyed ourselves, although we could do without the 95 degree heat. At first, several folks suggested the shorter boynton vista hike; however, we were determined to finish the course. I suppose this hike may be more enjoyable as listed, that is during cooler weather, because of the first mile and half provided little shade.

We appreciated finishing in pines after having started in unshaded brush. Would enjoy seeing the falls at the end of the canyon.

Not having hiked much in Red Rock Country, we really can not determine if this was the best choice for scenery in the one day we had in Sedona.

:) A good initial hike, although the trip back up the canyon was a little difficult in discerning the trail back up, both my son and I enjoyed ourselves. The markers up the canyon are spaced just enough for a good challenge. Great views going down the canyon. One day I would enjoy continuing on the pine trail at the deep pool signs.

Was speaking with a co-worker today who has never climbed Camelback. Thought all outdoor types had already. Then I realized I never logged two hikes up this trail my son and I completed last fall. I wonder if anyone even bothers climbing here in the valley past 8am with temp so high.
Anyway, my son and I had a grand time, his first experience hiking with me for a few years. He really enjoyed the view up top, and he had a blast navigating the rocks. A real joy if you have a teenager and you want to spend quality time together. But please what until the temp drops a bit! The days we hiked, even in late September was warm enough for a good sweat.
