I used the north trail as a precursor to the Ballentine trail and the south trail after I finished the Ballentine trail. The north trail is more relaxed and goes around the side of the mountain while the south is more straight up-and-over the top. I'd recommend taking the north trail if you're heading towards Boulder Flat as a warm-up, and the south trail was a nice way to work the calves and thighs for the last mile or so. Although, I do think the trail is under 3/2.75 miles...

Also, the south trail sign is missing at the trail head.

The Ballentine trail is worth going beyond the Pine Creek Loop. Unfortunately, I did not travel beyond Boulder Flat.
