Started around 5 PM and found the trail to be rather empty considering it was the Fourth of July weekend. I passed perhaps 10 people on the way up, but had the entire Basin to myself when I reached the top. It really is a fabulous feeling to be all alone in such a peaceful place--I could hardly drag myself back down.

Although I was a few months early for the fall foliage for which the Inner Basin is famous, the combination of of snow-capped peaks, wild flowers, lush green grass, and snow-melt streams made it an absolutely gorgeous hike. There were even a few patches of snow just off the trail.

GPS reception was pretty spotty, but given the terrain and dense forest, it's understandable. I had no signal for almost a mile in the middle of the hike.

I'll certainly be returning in the fall to check out the foliage and give myself more time to explore.

My girlfriend and I decided to head out to the Supes and test out my new Christmas present: an eTrex Legend. It was a gorgeous day for a hike and we quickly ran into a group of the above-mentioned healthy senior citizens on their way back. The views were wonderful and the trip out was a nice relaxing hike. After lunching on a nice boulder in the creek bed, we decided to head back to the trailhead through the canyon rather than retrace our path. The vegetation turned out to be much more dense than we had anticipated, but we found our way out. About halfway into our return trip we met a nice older couple from the Midwest who were also attempting to exit through the canyon but were considering turning around. After some brief map and GPS checking they decided to continue through the canyon and we hiked out together. All in all it's a nice hike that I'll probably do again soon. Be sure to keep an eye out for the cairns marking the way out of the canyon if you decide to go that way. They're on the right side of the canyon (assuming you're headed toward Canyon Lake) just before the canyon makes a very obvious S-curve. Approximate GPS coordinates are N33 31.50 W111 25.10. These will get you in the general area, but you'll certainly have to look for them. I'll get a more accurate reading next time I'm out. Enjoy the hike!

My girlfriend and I did Cholla a few months ago as our first trip up Camelback, so we thought we give Echo Canyon a try. We took our sweet time going up (GPS showed equal stopped and moving time) and made decent time down. I have to say that I definitely prefer the Echo Canyon scenery, but the Cholla hike. I'm not a big fan of the steps...seems like they take more energy than climbing without them :) Overall it was a great hike, however. Maybe someday I'll be one of those Camelback Runners!
