I am still surprised to see six mule deer in the White Tanks at 5:12pm. I was told they are there, but it is difficult for me to believe they are able to find a living there.

I started my hike at about 4:30 on Monday afternoon. There was only one other car parked. I hike in until about 6:oo and turned around. I returned to my car by 7:15, long after dark.

The recent attack by a mountain lion in California traveled with me in the dark on my return in an almost moonless night. If deer can live here so could the mountain lion. Mountain lions, like all cats watch for patterns of behavior in their prey. Humans on a trail make a nice pattern. Every quail that flew out of its slumber roost heightened my senses. It was an exciting hike.

Peralta is lovely in the rain and less traveled. The trail becomes a chocolate Ovaltine colored babbling brook with a little rain. I disappointed myself with inadequate rain gear and had to turn around when I got cold. It was still a lovely hike.

This was the second time I had made the hike, but the first time I appreciated it. The first time I went was in the summer. I was not able to appreciate the beauty in the summer.

My rainy day winter hike was spectacular. The colors of the rock formations were saturated and rich. The sky was dramatic. The temperature was invigorating. It was a visual delight.

I could feel the burn in my buns and calves. It is somewhat weird to be hiking up a service road, but it is close, and good exercise. What boggles me is that two of the ten or so parking spaces are for handicap parking. Unless you have a key to the gat, I do not think you could get a wheel chair up the service road. (With a 16% grade, a wheel chair might not be a good idea anyway) The view is interesting. Makes me realize it is possible to integrate my city side with my nature side.

I started this hike from the top of the rim where the trail marker proclaims: "See Canyon Trail Maintained by the Phoenix Varmit Callers". I wonder who the varmit callers are. I suspect I would enjoy the company of these people.

It was a great hike. I would have preferred to hike from the bottom to the top, so that the return trip would not have been so strenuous. There are connecting trails and better start points. I would have been well served to do a little better research prior to my hike. I was a little exhausted coming out. I found two nature made walking sticks to assist on the assent to my auto.
I shall go back some day. It was quite lovely.
