Prologue
Test your patience and agility knee-deep in prickly thorns. Relax to the thrilling soundtrack of your own personal symphony, featuring grunts, and curses. Embrace the chaos, embrace the madness, and remember that the most memorable adventures often include an unpleasant bushwhack! Access Find the worst parking spot directly off the north side of Highway 260 at Tonto Creek Road (FR 289).
Ascend the grassy hill on the east side of the road. Crash through several oak thickets and ignore the overwhelming vehicular noise from the busy highway below. After a few hundred feet of elevation gain, figure out how to gap a well-constructed and very high game fence. We chose to squeeze underneath it, perhaps other hikers would prefer to try and climb it. Continue bushwhacking up the hillside through Manzanita and Acacia, while also trying to be cognizant of all the Agave spears. Keep your hopes up for signs of any kind of trail, but don't be too disappointed because one never appears, besides perhaps some Elk paths. Synopsis Finally, forget all of this and just hike the Derrick Trail #33. Without all the ensuing nightmares, it'll get you where you wish to go. Check out the Official Route and Triplogs. Leave No Trace and +Add a Triplog after your hike to support this local community. One-Way Notice This hike is listed as One-Way. When hiking several trails on a single "hike", log it with a generic name that describes the hike. Then link the trails traveled, check out the example. |
