Half day guide, seven sport routes. Three leads and four top ropes starting at the back wall of Phra Nang Beach (Money Maker Pillar) and finishing on Muay Thai of Railay East. Warm and steamy day but both crags were shaded so it was tolerable. Climbing limestone isn't high on the to do list but When In Thailand! Stunning landscape with an interesting longtail boat shuttle system for access to this beautiful area.

Roundtrip Lantau Island Cable Car to/from Big Buddha near the Po Lin Monastery. Required a brief stroll through the touristy village to the plaza and then up the 268 steps to the large bronze sculpture atop Mount Muk Yue. Breezy, cooler and hazier than the day before. The trail system within this county park seemed well-established, maintained and challenging from the impermanent birdseye view. Thus gone, thus come. :-k

Up Old Peak Road and down the tram. True highpoint isn't possible because of some communication towers. Several gardens and viewpoints are along the way and near the top. Summit beers at the Bakehouse.

Solo return trip to finish hauling out the remaining tat and upgrade the anchors. Now if any skilled enough climbers complete any of the challenging east side routes, there are rap stations for a quick descent back to the base. Skipped summiting this time but for reentry, reexplored Nine Turtle Stack and [ Terrapin Throne - Peak 3826 ] .

And now Mrs. Claus is really upset! :-k : wink : Insert a lode joke here --> ?

Brief contemplation to complete the SR10 on solstice day but decided not missing dinner at DQ with my parents was more important. Besides, adding on Jack Mountain and Mount Hopkins just doesn't seem like a worthwhile flow. Even though it's lower, I thought McCleary had a stunning view. The rock-hard snow patches on several of the north aspects were annoying, as was Josephine Peak. I doubt I'll ever do that crappy bushwhack again. Regardless, it was the hundredth for the year. Overall, a nice ridgeline route that is better than staying on the Crest Trail for the transverse.

An awesome area similar to Oak Flat and the Supes. Mostly freestyled a route but did follow some of ssk44 and Chumley's previous tracks to get back near lake level. Both kayak crossings were stressful choppiness. Definitely will be going back.

Started off CW with Bursera Canyon just to switch it up. No sign of any collarless Heelers (which would be illegal) but we may have passed JJ descending the Pyramid Trail. Who knows... G.Hill today, G.Mountain tomorrow!?!

The same Nov 15 2023 triplet loop but CCW this time. Directly after the first tough 4x4 section of FR 213 there was a significant grease puddle stain and then an oil drip trail on the road for a while. This is the reason why I’ve always walked this section to avoid an elevated tow bill and expensive wheeler repairs. :-k We don’t all possess 00blackout's mad wheeler skills! It seemed like a really warm morning until dropping into Tortilla Well. Once on the JF, things were interesting for a bit because of two aggressive and snorty Javelinas. I had to literally yell and wave my arms to get them to back off. Game trails descending Lost Dutch were mostly camouflaged by all the vegetative green carpet. Fish Creek is flowing nicely, which made it somewhat of a slower split by trying to keep the feet dry. The first scramble below the buttress seemed spicier than I remembered but the final dike scramble wasn't. This time I noticed quite a few massive dead junipers near Spyro Portal and the Ram's Horn Arches. Perhaps remnants of a past cooler and wetter climate. Flushed three Coue on the ascent to Black Cross, scrambling a more direct eastern ridge which had quite a few fun bouldery sections. By chance I also scrambled the east face of Fish Creek Peak that I didn't know was possible since the previous trip's direction made it more difficult to determine if that side went. Since it's a weekday, not many vehicles on the Apache Trail, but I still bypassed the sweeping Fish Creek switchback to shorten the amount of busier afternoon road walking. I suppose it's time to write a guide for FCM, since I've done it twice now and both directions. : wink :

CW again but solo this time with a JF Trail southern terminus start and no Frog Tank add-on. Uber wind was stinging cold for several hours then it was perfect. Killed two birds with one stone and knocked off the remarkable La Barge Mountain and the meh Peak 5822. The road is about as crappy as usual and 5077's summit log was probably the most pathetic POS I've ever come across. Would be interesting to check out the other arches on the SW ridge of La Barge. Perhaps on another standalone trip.

Essentially followed LJW's tough route from Jan 11 2022 except I hiked it CCW and didn't spur to the Ballantine Cabin (already been there many times). I did tack on the Pine Connect to the Pigeon Springs Road just to check it out for a possible future hike. As others have mentioned in previous TLs, fortunately the Bush Fire didn't burn everything. The trail up to Pine Mountain from Cline TH was better than expected with signs that some pruning has occurred. Also surprised that elk seem to like the area. Still some nice Ponderosa groves and everything was squishy and flowing still, including the neat Rock Tank. Ballantine Canyon goes on forever and really doesn't have a trail anymore. The Ballantine Connector seemed more maddening and monotonous because it's basically an expert motorcycle route. I completed quite a few FR 143 miles and determined that Michelob Ultra is the sissy beer of choice for dicky do side-by-siders. Route Scout stopped working just before mile twelve when it annoyingly informed me that no more points could be logged. Perhaps just going with the default settings isn't optimal for longer hikes. As usual, Allfails worked perfectly. :-k May have to re-up the subscription.

The amount of unnecessary tat discovered on route was disconcerting. We removed some but it would need another trip to clean and setup to a tolerable degree. Optimistically, the main bolt/ring for the west side rap that Dave & I added twenty years ago is holding up nicely, albeit not as level as I'd prefer but that doesn't warrant redoing (yet). :)

A beautiful season to be wandering the lower desert. Both summits involved some careful granite boulder scrambling that really can't be avoided. Thin Mountain seemed like finer, whiter crystals, where Hayden Peak was a grungier coarse brown with more plentiful quartz dikes. Each area has petroglyphs, one happened upon unexpectedly, the other was signed with an accompanying trail camera. Teddy-bear cholla were the more plentiful Cylindropuntia around TM but HP also had a more unique pencil-cholla forest on its south side. There's definitely an anomalous vegetation dichotomy exhibiting now between the north and south aspects of our desert peaks. SR 187 is under construction so parking's a bit challenging for HP. Not that this area is on anyone's radar, but Sundays would currently be better until they're finished.

I mean, who doesn't like a reach-around? :-s It couldn't possibly rain all morning. Wrong.

To celebrate backpay payday, I found it warranted to use sick leave to honor the House doing absolutely nothing for a six-week period and felt nauseous about the recent ‘mathing’ being done by supporters of the party currently in power. :sk:

Three pairs of eyes along the MMT were likely deer. Then the fog set in, followed by some sprinkling and then actual rain. I wisely took an hour delay at an overhang before reaching the ridgeline. Once moving again, there was the sound of foamy rapids, mud shoe squishing and twice rattles from within boulder piles being traversed. I didn't see any hippies over near Peak 3195 but that area is such a geologic upchuck. Seemed apt for this sick day. Searching for breccia to climb doesn't rank high on my climbing goals list but perhaps I'll return when there aren't waterfalls cascading down every possible summit route. The broken flagpole was hauled off of Peak 3125 along with some other garbage found along the route. The only sign of others was one set of boot and dog prints once descending from BS. RIP DC.
