Didn't the high country get a ton of snow recently? I too would like to know the condition of 191! I want to use my cabin as basecamp, and get acclimated. I just don't think I could make it out, even with 4 wheel drive.

In response to hikeaz's reply: Twice , the machines would not take my money, i had to use a credit card:( If you are an illegal alien, does that mean you still have to pay? If you use a friend's car, and don't pay, does that mean your friend's credit rating will be affected? Why can't there be a da...

Re: 2/10- Environmental Day, Protecting Arizona’s Environme

In response to hikeaz's reply: If anybody can go for me:) I'm planning on hiking picacho peak. I sure would like to know what we can do for the poor blind diseased bighorn sheep, caused by the introduction of goats. We can't transplant them, and who is going to hunt down the goats? Maybe I'll go if...

Re: Crossing the line

In response to joe bartels' reply: no, except for area closed. Reasoning. I don't mind if respectful people walk on my property to get across is to go somewhere else. I am not super-territorial. In fact, I am not territorial at all. Since I LNT, and I don't walk on cyrogenic soil, if I can help it,...

elk

I've seen elk on 260 several times. Once there was a huge buck at the gas station in Heber. Other times there were 3 or 4 does on the side of the road just past the series of 4 or 5 signs warning of elk on 260. Since I'm usually hauling a loaded or empty trailer, I am always going pretty slow on tha...

I like a balaclava better than a hat, it keeps the drafts out better. I don't like to be in a tent because with the extra 10 degrees warmth I always get condensation. Venting seems to defeat the purpose of the extra warmth. I'd like to investigate getting a bag cover for extra protection from the wi...

Re: Bark beetle trees

In response to Diane Tuccillo's reply: Yes, I have seen the damage. And it is terrible to behold. I always thought it was the prolonged drought that caused the bark beetles to take hold. Once a tree's resistance is down, the bark beetles can take over. I think we have the drought to blame for the b...

Anasazi salad

Here's a recipe for salad in the wild. Just make sure you know what you're picking, perhaps consult a nice desert plant guide first or ask, tour Botanical gardens. Nice to know (just in case) Prickly pear fruit, salsify root, purslane(not too much), squaw berries, holly berries, chewable ends of hor...

I plan for 8oz an hour when hiking, and fill up the 70 oz again for dinner and breakfast. then fill up the 70 oz again for a day's hiking. I have always drank every last drop by the time I get back. If you practice enough, you'll get to know what you use on average. It's a good idea to eat salty sna...
