Re: Wild Bees need a new home, please
As of today, the bees have vacated the fallen branch! No killing was needed and they will live to pollinate! My putting a sprinkler on them may have had something to do with their departure.

Secret Fire
The Secret Fire is about 15 acres on steep slopes in the Secret Mountain Wilderness/Loy Canyon area. As of this morning, it is about 40% contained. There are road closures and use restrictions in place. The Arizona Daily Sun is reporting this fire. FYI: This is the same area where a plane crashed a ...

Re: REI to Open in Flagstaff
I can't wait for REI to come up here! The other retailers have such limited selections that I end up driving to Phoenix for my gear. If I recall, Trader Joe's and the city of Flagstaff had some very bad negociations and Trader Joe's says they will NEVER come to Flagstaff. Now we have New Frontiers, ...

Wild Bees need a new home, please
A branch of a big, old cottonwood at my house in Camp Verde came down. It's full of honey bees and they have been there for more than a week. I can't find anyone to come get them--and I don't want them killed. Does anyone have suggestions?

Congrats, Jake! And goood luck, Liz. Re the job: I work for Flag's school district as a speech/language pathologist. Call me if you need help with your speech after a head injury when hiking--just kidding. I worked at the hospital for over 10 years and had to leave because it made me sad. Working wi...

Re: Horton Creek fees?
I haven't been there this year, but last year there was a sign at the nearest parking lot--the one with the toilets, with a day use fee. I just park on the road to avoid the fees.

Congrats, Kevin, on breaking your Diet Coke addition! You give me hope--I'm a DC addict, too. Maybe we should start a support group. Seriously, you are taking on some serious bad habits. I applaud your choices to get healthier. :worthy:

I'm really sorry I won't be able to make this one. I will miss seeing those I met last at Hart Prairie and meeting others. But the good news for me is that tomorrow I close on a house ON THE VERDE RIVER! Now I can kayak to my backyard!!!

Secret Canyon to the rim
Does anyone know if it is possible to follow Secret Canyon to the rim going up canyon? I know that the Loy Canyon trail tops out at the saddle with Secret Canyon on the other side and I was wondering about if it would be possible. Or would you have to go up Loy Canyon and down Secret--would rappelin...

Crested Cactus Destroyed
I saw this on KPHO news last night: http://www.kpho.com/video?clipId=7426527&autostart=true A double crested saguaro in the Four Peaks area has been destroyed. I don't know much more, but it would be nice if someone local could confirm/deny. The man who reported the story called it King Crest.

Re: Memorials on Public Land
Scattering ashes is one thing, making memorials is another. The pictures, notes, plastic flowers, etc. are litter in my opinion. I think they should scatter some ashes in the person's favorite place then put the rest in a proper place (on the mantel, in a crypt, etc) and keep the notes, flowers, and ...
