Re: Advice on hiking to phantom in Feb or Aug?
I usually try to plan my canyon trips in Feb/ early March. Crowds are down for the most part. I have been sweating with sunburn and shivering in my bag all over the same weekend trip in Feb. Expect anything. Bring micro spikes for 2 miles close to the top.

Re: WB US60 to close in Tempe
I drive that stretch every day. You would not believe the amount of accidents that occur there. I always wondered if Tempe FD just staged an engine on the on-ramp to the 60 WB at Mill. Its literally every day.

Re: Social Media Promoting Our "Hidden" Hikes
Guh the moment I saw that group. Its the same questions over and over and over. Its funny to notice, one person will do something and post pics... then it seems within the following weeks there are a handful more posting pics from that very spot. Funny how that works. Any way, its more frustration t...

Re: Canyon Creek or Haigler Creek
Haigler is quicker to get to. Right at 2 hours from my place at Alma School and Baseline. Haigler is warmer from my experience. I frequent both places with my daughter (almost 4) I would suggest Canyon Creek.. there is always the self guided hatchery tour at Canyon Creek. Park at the bridge crossing...

Re: Emergency Transmitters / Locators - 2015
Every time you dial 911 your coordinates are displayed to the call taker. The information is released in two phases. Phase 1 is not as accurate. This is the location of tower that is handling the call. Phase 2 is the location of the device that is placing the call. In the 911 center that I work in, ...

Re: Grand Canyon Access? Camping?
@chumley I agree 100% and actually got into that same discussion. I am sure it will get abused. With the unexpected weather over the long weekend.. There was a line of folks at the BC office that friday morning at 7:30am. All of them were last minute folks that wanted to get a last minute permit. It...

Re: Grand Canyon Access? Camping?
I asked them about this at the back country office as well as the ranger down at Phantom on my trip last weekend.. They both said they make special exceptions for AZT thru hikers and have fit them in. The ranger at the ranch said they will sometimes combine them with others at sites or will put them...

I recently purchased the sierra designs back country bed in long. I am 6 foot tall as well with broadish shoulders. I am also a stomach sleeper. I couldn't be more pleased with it.
I would try it on and make sure it works for you. Just my $.02

finding cuttys will be a challenge as well. Especially on the fly. Big Lake is your best chance for that. Along with some remote streams in the whites.

Re: AZ Trout Challenge
A few of the Tigers are bound to escape into upper Tonto creek from the rearing pools and the transportation process. While they won't reproduce, I would not be surprised if someone caught one. I have heard reports of people getting into apaches in Tonto... So I am sure a few tigers will end up in ...

Re: AZ Trout Challenge
I think you get a certificate and pictures.
Tigers are what you get when a brook trout and a brown trout get to know each other. They do occur in wild but most are produced in a hatchery.
They are sterile and don't produce. Grow quickly, are pretty hearty, and are a meat eater/ predator.

Re: AZ Trout Challenge
The grayling is going to be a challenge. There is one lake in the whites that I know of that has em. The tigers are supposed to go in sometime in 2016 with woods canyon getting the majority of them. Willow springs and a few others in the whites are getting them as well. From what I have read. I need...

This is from Terry Gunn up at Lee's Ferry Anglers.. thought some of you may be interested in this. "We are getting lots of calls about the mine spill into the Animas River and now that the slug of water is approaching Lake Powell, how it might affect Lees Ferry. This is a tragic spill but I do ...

I can recall them dealing with mud slides in Oak Creek before this.... A bunch of years back TEE LACK AH PACK EEE (cause I don't know how to spell it) got swamped with bunch of mud from Oak Creek.
Oh if a good storm hits north of town.. that will be nothing.

Re: Slide Fire - Oak Creek Canyon - Sedona
I would think the "pristine" streams are not going to fair well once the rain does come. Not to be a bummer but mud is going to be round two in this whole ordeal. Hopefully these streams will do better that I am thinking. Another fantastic AZ fishery that is going to have a challenge to re...

At my last job we used DPS pilots to get us access to radio sites. The most impressive thing I have seen was the pilot long line a couple hundred pounds of batteries to the site on Mummy Mountain in PV. He sat those batteries between the tower guy wires right next to the equipment cabinet. Very impr...
