Re: Checklist for Passage 1 through 3

Good tips from Sandy!

Regarding long sleeves, long pants and no sunscreen, this also has the added advantage that you get much less dirty. The desert is very dusty and there is not much opportunity to wash yourself. Your sleepingbag will be grateful too!

I also didn't bother with Mormon Lake. Resupplied in Pine and after that Flagstaff.

Re: La Posta Quemada Ranch - Re-supply

How about Roosevelt Marina and Forest service visitors center? Do they accept packaged? Roosevelt Marina accepts packages. That is actually a really good option because the lady at the bar can still get your package after the shop has already closed. The lake is good for a refreshing swim and the v...

Re: NOBO hike late april

@desertadapted I plan on buying Guthook today. I wasn't sure how the water reports are updated on it after you have downloaded it and when you are on the trail???-- Last year when I hiked the AZT I used Guthook AZT app on a phone without a SIM. I just used the wifi to update the water reports and c...

Re: Guthook's AZT app

@jasont As rcorfman already wrote, you see a detailed map with yourself on it. Very convenient! I went the wrong way quite a few times, especially on the northern half where you sometimes follow forest roads for several miles before taking a turn to a small trail. Although the AZT is well signposte...

Re: Guthook's AZT app

Ditto on Fireflys comment . I also kept a copy of the AT book on my Kindle app as well. I also carried a small 5 ounce solar panel rather than a battery pack due to the increased load on phone battery . Similar here. I kept the AT book on my phone. Makes good reading in the evening to prepare for t...

Re: Guthook's AZT app

@regenerator

The app is awesome. I did also carry a full set of paper maps as a backup but they never left my backpack, except one time to "rescue" another hiker who had a dead phone. I did all my navigation using the app.

I also really liked the very recent water reports that you get on the app.

Re: Bear sacks

There are many stretches of the trail where you won't be able to hang your food 10' off the ground, especially on the first half of the AZT. I used an Ursack that I hung above the ground when possible but it was often still within easy reach of bears or other wildlife. However, I have no indication ...

Re: Favorite Water Treatment?

Regarding my post above, I can now confirm that the Evernew bladders fit the Sawyer filter perfectly. So I will use Evernew as my 'dirty' bladder from now on. As you can see in the picture below, the threads are very different (L:Platypus, R:Evernew). Platypus is the odd one out. Evernew and Sawyer ...

Re: Permits

To be very clear: I was able to reserve (and pay for) the campsite well in advance (even in time to receive the paper permit in England). The only problem was paying the national park fee because the booking site only accepted today's date.

Re: Permits

@Sporsioux I also live in the UK and last year I got my camping permit for Grass Shack/ Manning online and they sent the (paper) camping permit to my home address in the UK. You are also supposed to pay an entry fee and because the AZT doesn't pass near an office you have to pay for that online too...

Re: Favorite Water Treatment?

@rkroeger I've never heard of anybody having a problem like this. Smart water bottles, 2 liter soda bottles, plus many other bottles all have the same threading that the Sawyer filters have. Strange. I don't know about Smartwater bottles, but the Sawyer Mini doesn't properly fit Platypus bladders b...

Re: Question about weather for AZT veterans...

Regarding temperatures, last year I carried a thermometer so I was able to measure. Temperatures in the morning were often around freezing and sometimes below. The coldest I've measured was 24F at North Rim on the morning of May 18th. (measured near the ground next to my tent). The night before had ...

Re: NOBO AZT Spring 2018 ~ Mid-March

I just sent in a request for a backcountry permit during the times I plan to be in GCNP excluding the first night at Mather. This didn't surprise me at all, but all of the corridor campgrounds are already full for late April, so I had to settle for one of the threshold use areas, but I included a n...

Re: AZT Total Elevation Gain

@FireFly This is available here on HAZ. If you click "expand" the elevation profile, you can even move along the trail and zoom in on various segments and ranges, etc. as well as view the location on the map. https://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=9225&P=3 Yes I knew that. But I just wanted a simple s...

Re: AZT Total Elevation Gain

If you through-hike going northbound, the AEG is 113,088 feet. If you through-hike going southbound, the AEG is 113,537 feet. (I was surprised by how similar they are!) The start and finish are within 1000' of each other, so you'd have to come out about even. Of course, I've heard people swear that...

Re: AZT Total Elevation Gain

I contacted Atlasguides (maker of the AZT-app) last year with the same question. Their answer: "We do have the ascent/descent info-- what I have shows the trail (which is 788.7 miles long) has a total ascent of 110,683 feet, and a total descent of 111,597 feet." So that is the AZT as it was on the a...

Re: NOBO AZT Spring 2018 ~ Mid-March

@FireFly Thanks for the detailed post! It helped with my resupply planning. My only concern is arriving before May 15th, do I have to get a permit or do I just go on through the trail. I need to do more research on that, I'm a bit confused. Thanks! Paul If you arrive at North Rim before May 15th th...

Re: AZT thru hike in March 2018

For clear water, I still don't see anything easier than a Steripen ... dip my bottle in the water, then stir with the magic wand for 30-45 seconds, and done! Yes I agree, they are very easy to use. I also have a Steripen myself. But personally I don't bring it on expeditions like AZT because I find...
