Question about Google Earth elevation profiles

Post by WVMike »

Greetings,
There is a Google Earth elevation profile here: (not SPAM)!
http://epicroadtrips.us/GE_EP/

Do any of the elevation stats reflect the accumulated elevation gain?

Thanks,
-Mike

Hi Joe,
More info:
The El profile is for the La Milagrosa / Agua Caliente Canyon Loop.
See: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN= ... 2d77a2c1ae

It lists the elevation gain as 970'.

Google Earth says 1604'
A big difference. This made me wonder if the GE el gain was accumulated.

duh, let me put my glasses on

yes!
it looks like GE gain on that profile is accumulated

The one on the description is an old track with few points. I'll update. 1500 ish looks more correct.

thx

Grrr! I missed this on at http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN= ... 2d77a2c1ae
"1,302 aeg"

This is about 300' less than the GE figure which I suspect may be AEG.
Anyone no for sure if this is the case?
Thanks,

Max elevation: 3758
Min elevation: 2789
Difference: 969

Elev Gain listed at: 1604

Seems like it is adding 635 feet of gain for something.

HAZ synced stats for the route are for 961 total and 1317 aeg.

So I assume google's 1604 is their aeg. But they probably use a different topo sync database than HAZ does.

I would need the actual track file being used on GE to determine more...

I save all my gpx files in Google Earth. The AEG it comes up with runs high about 99% of the time, so I don't really trust it. Plus, if you look at the elevation profile of the same gpx file in GE on different sized computer monitors, it will give you different mileage & AEG. Not kidding. I've tried this on three different computers in my house, all the numbers were slightly different.
Stop crying and just go do the hike.

Which hike are you talking about, the hike in the canyons, or the hike along the rims of the two canyons? My, SAMBA (aka LaFong) canyons hike, http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=9987, was done in the canyons proper and had 972 aeg, whereas the "official route", http://hikearizona.com/map.php?GPS=31166, is a rim hike with a 1439 aeg. Could this be the source of the perceived discrepancy?

Wendy just posted the loop with more points of data from RS. The description one, which is the rim hike, definitely looks in 1450 to 1500 range max.

We found very wide discrepancy in elevation profiles and totals depending on which program you used and even between versions of the same application.

After looking at your two tracks I think we hiked the "official" route.
It was well worn the entire way.
The trail started at a gate, meandered up past an old stone house on the left, climbed and then crossed the creek, climbed more to the intersection of the trail which comes down from the Molino Basin Campground area. (http://epicroadtrips.us/Miligrosa%2011-15.gtm/)
The trail then wound down to the creek. We followed cairns down the creek and then picked up a trail on the left and then up to a ridge and then finally down a steep switchback to the creek and the trail we came in on.

I have on been there once a coupla months ago and the details are foggy.

Thanks,
-Mike/Al
