Mt Ord Via Slate Creek Trailhead
Hey everyone quick question here. Interested in heading up to Mt Ord Via the slate creek trailhead. Wondering if it's doable in a sidexside? (Smaller than wrangler) heard this is a beautiful trail but might be bad in spots. Thanks all

I drove up there in a Toyota Corolla in 2010.

@gummo
I think you probably did it via FR626 in your Corolla. The post asked from Slate Creek TH, and yes it's doable and done from there quite often in ORV's,

Re: Mt Ord Via Slate Creek Trailhead
There was a rave at the 27/626 intersection last Saturday. I talked to some of the remaining tweakers Sunday afternoon when I walked down the road about a mile and back while geocaching. There were lots of tire tracks and I've been on most of the road before either hiking or mt. biking. Should be no problem with a side by side OHV.

Re: Mt Ord Via Slate Creek Trailhead
Bump. What about in a jeep wrangler? Some of the pics make the road look pretty narrow and no desire to tumble off the side of the road. I gotta lift on my jeep and run 33's so not worried about ground clearance as much as width. Much thanks!

@louie
For most of the trail/road, I agree with @chumley, but I seem to recall a sketchy part near the beginning of the ascent, where the road was pretty washed out and sloughed off into the ravine .... It was near some old mining debris. That spot would be beyond my driving comfort zone, but I'm not a 4x4 enthusiast ....

Re: Mt Ord Via Slate Creek Trailhead
Hmm. So is the tricky part right at the beginning coming up from slate creek? If so at least I'll know pretty quick what I'm getting myself into. I'm pretty cautious and will have my kids in the jeep so definitely won't do anything that makes me uncomfortable. Maybe even hike it first to check it out. Is it within the first quarter mile or so? Thank you for the tips:-)

If I recall correctly the worst spots are at about .3 mile and .5 mile from the TH when following the 'Mount Ord from Slate Creek' Official Route.louie wrote:Is it within the first quarter mile or so?

Re: Mt Ord Via Slate Creek Trailhead
It's been over a year since I've been there, but I would concur. The diciest parts of the trail from what I remember come up pretty quick. Couple of spots where the road opens up to big drop off below.CannondaleKid wrote:If I recall correctly the worst spots are at about .3 mile and .5 mile from the TH when following the 'Mount Ord from Slate Creek' Official Route.

Yes, the worst part is near the start. I've ridden my mountain bike up it a few times and have hiked it a couple of times too.

Re: Mt Ord Via Slate Creek Trailhead
I have a lifted Grand Cherokee and would not hesitate to drive it. A lifted Wrangler should have no problem at all. Last time I hiked it a month or so ago a group of FJ Crusiers were coming down as I was going up. You will be fine. Even most of the trees have been cut.
